How to Pay the Zakah on Savings from a Salary

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: I am an employee who receives a salary, and every month I save a portion of it. There is no specific percentage for saving. How do I pay the zakah on this money?

A: It is obligatory for you to pay the zakah on every portion you save, once its lunar year of possession has completed and it reaches the minimum threshold for zakah. If you pay the zakah on the entire amount when the lunar year of the first portion is completed, that is sufficient, and the zakah on the later portions becomes advanced before their lunar years are completed. Advancing the zakah before the completion of the lunar year is permissible, especially if there is a pressing need or a legitimate Islamic interest for doing so.
