How to Pay Zakah on a Monthly Salary
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Our brother asks and says: What is the method by which I must pay zakah on my monthly salary, given that I am an employee and have no wealth other than this salary I receive? Do I pay zakah on every salary as soon as I receive it, month by month, like the zakah on crops and fruits? Or do I wait until a lunar year has passed for each month, then pay zakah on the balance in the same month of the following year? Or what should I do?
May Allah reward you with good.
Answer:
It is obligatory to pay zakah on the salary, and on wealth other than the salary, when a lunar year has passed over it. So if you have ten thousand riyals in Ramadan, and they remain until the year is complete, you pay zakah on them. Or if half of them remain, you pay zakah on the remainder. And so it is in Shawwal, and so it is in Dhul-Qa'dah, and so it is in Dhul-Hijjah, each month with its own time. When a lunar year has passed over it, you pay zakah on what remains of it. You should keep the matters organized by writing them down so that you preserve what is obligatory upon you. This is what is obligatory upon you. It is not obligatory to pay zakah as soon as your salary reaches you. No, it is obligatory when the lunar year has passed, as Ibn 'Umar and others said: "Whoever acquires wealth, there is no zakah upon him until a lunar year has passed over it." And it was narrated as marfu' from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the hadith of 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) :Sunan Ibn Majah 1792Hasan (Darussalam) This is the correct view.
As for the statement of those who say that one pays zakah on what he receives as a gift, or a salary, from the time of receipt without waiting for a lunar year; this is a weak and weaker position. The correct view is that it is not obligatory in inheritance, nor in what is gifted to you, nor in your salary, to pay zakah until a lunar year has passed over it, regarding your share of the wealth in inheritance, if it is currency of gold and silver, until a lunar year has passed.
And likewise, it is not obligatory for you to pay zakah on what one of your brothers has gifted you, or what one of your brothers has given you as a gift; there is no zakah upon it until a lunar year has passed over it. So if you spend it before that, you owe nothing. And likewise, the salary: its zakah becomes obligatory only when a lunar year has passed over it. Yes.
