One whose illness persists until the coming Ramadan

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question: From 'Abd al-'Aziz ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Baz to the honorable brother /... and after:
Your letter has reached us, along with the information that your wife has been ill for several years, which compelled her to break her fast during the month of Ramadan in 1391 AH, and that she is unable to fast the month of Ramadan this year. Your desire for a ruling was known.

Answer: As long as fasting is difficult for her, it is prescribed for her to break her fast, and she must make up the fasts if Allah heals her, based on the saying of Allah the Exalted:
and whoever is ill or on a journey - then an equal number of other daysوَمَن كَانَ مَرِيضًا أَوْ عَلَى سَفَرٍ فَعِدَّةٌ مِّنْ أَيَّامٍ أُخَرَ
[al-Baqarah:185].
However, if the doctors determine that her illness is not expected to be cured, she must feed a poor person, half a sa' (a dry measure of about 3 kg) of the local staple food for each day, and she owes no make-up fasts.
We ask Allah to clothe her in the garments of health and well-being, and to make what has befallen her a purification and an expiation of sins. Indeed, He is the best of those asked. And peace be upon you, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.
