Explanation of the author's statement: From Ibn 'Umar, Muhammad ibn Ka'b, Zayd ibn Aslam, and Qatadah — some of their narrations entered into others — that a man said during the expedition to Tabuk

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Five of the Companions lagged behind, two of whom caught up with the army later, and three did not catch up. Their story is famous and well known, and they were Hilal ibn Umayyah, Mararah ibn al-Rabi', and Ka'b ibn Malik. The cause of this expedition was that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was informed that the Romans and the Arab Christians who supported them were gathering against him. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) wanted to march against them in their lands. This is the height of strength: if he had remained and these armies had come, the consequences would have been severe. But he wanted to go out to demonstrate his strength, for he fights for the sake of Allah, in the path of Allah, and for Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He does not fight for Arab nationalism, Persian nationalism, Indian nationalism, or any other nationalism. No, he fights so that the word of Allah is the highest. And Allah promised him in His saying:
It is He who has sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth to manifest it over all religion
[At-Tawbah 9:33]
The word of Allah and the religion of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) must be the highest. So he went out and remained in Tabuk for about twenty days, but he did not encounter any enemy, and he returned (peace and blessings be upon him). In this expedition, his she-camel got lost. It got lost, and some of the hypocrites talked before they returned. They said: "This Muhammad claims that news comes to him from the sky, yet his she-camel is lost and he does not know where it is." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
I do not know of the unseen except what Allah the Exalted has informed me of, and He informed me through Jibril that the camel is in such-and-such a valley.
So they went to the she-camel and found it in that valley. May Allah send prayers and peace upon him. In this expedition, there were multiple signs, among which he said:
There will be a strong wind tonight and so no one should stand
Sahih al-Bukhari 1481, 1482
And he ordered them to tie their camels securely, and they did. Then a man stood up after the wind blew, and it lifted him and carried him to the mountains of Thaqif. Yes.
The student: ...

The Shaykh : In Ha'il, near Ha'il. And when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) returned to Medina, they brought him. Thaqif brought him to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). This is one of the signs of Allah, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) knew about it before it happened. It was certain knowledge. And what about the weather conditions?
The student: It was certain knowledge.

The Shaykh : It was certain knowledge, and therefore it happened. The one who contradicted [the claim] was carried by the wind to this place. Allahu Akbar. This is one of the signs of Allah. Yes?

The questioner : ...

The Shaykh : Perhaps they did not know... [it] compels the earth.
And this interpretation, as you see, has a point of view, but the meaning distances it. Because this display [of disbelief] preceded this act, as they used to display to their intimates what? Disbelief and mockery. This is what prevents interpreting the verse with this meaning, that the meaning is "you displayed disbelief." It is said that their display of disbelief was prior, for they were still displaying disbelief to their intimates.
And when they meet those who believe, they say, "We believe"; but when they are alone with their evil ones, they say, "Indeed, we are with you; we were only mockers."
[Al-Baqarah 2:14]
It is possible to reconcile the two views by saying that this verse was revealed regarding the weak in faith who mix with the hypocrites, sitting with them and hearing what they say. And this verse, "You disbelieved after you believed," would mean what it literally says. This is what the Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah supported, that these people disbelieved after they mocked, and the meaning is not that they displayed their hypocrisy and disbelief, because as you heard, that was apparent from before. And even if it is assumed that it was revealed regarding pure hypocrites who displayed their hypocrisy, and it was said to them, "You disbelieved after you believed," then this disbelief was attributed to the mockery, not to the essence of hypocrisy. There will be, there will be, there will be an indication in the verse that mockery is disbelief. Mockery of Allah, His verses, and His Messenger is disbelief. Whether we say that these people were believers and disbelieved by that, or that they were hypocrites and displayed that, Allah the Exalted says:
Is it Allah and His verses and His Messenger that you were mocking?" (66) Make no excuse; you have disbelieved after your belief. أبالله وآياته ورسوله كنتم تستهزئون لا تعتذروا قد كفرتم بعد إيمانكم
[At-Tawbah 9:65-66]
And that preceded it. In the hadith regarding the expedition to Tabuk, we said that this expedition was in the year? The ninth year of the Hijrah, and its cause was that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was told that a group of Romans and Arab Christians were gathering against him, so he wanted to march against them (peace and blessings be upon him) to demonstrate strength and in belief in the victory of Allah, Mighty and Majestic. And we said that in this expedition, multiple signs occurred that have no bearing on the topic of discussion. Good. And we stopped at, as you said, in the expedition to Tabuk. Yes.
The student: In the previous lesson, we did not mention the details of one of the views, meaning...

The Shaykh : Yes, and we mentioned it now.
The student: But we didn't start...

The Shaykh : Did you not record from the beginning of the lesson? ... Yes, it says:
So Awf ibn Malik said, "You have lied, but you are a hypocrite. We have not seen the like of our companions, these people, with greedier bellies."
, "We have not seen this vision." It is possible that it was visual or that it was spiritual knowledge. And his saying
Like our companions
is the first object, and his saying
With greedier bellies
is the second object. It is permissible to reverse it, so that the meaning is "We have not seen anyone with greedier bellies than these reciters of ours." The intended meaning of "reciters" is the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions.
And his saying
With greedier bellies
means wider. And the desire here meant width, because as the belly expands, a person desires to eat.
And his saying
and with more lying tongues
And We did not send any messenger except [speaking] in the language of his people
[Ibrahim 14:4]
meaning "We conveyed to them their message and their speech."
and with more cowardice in battle
, Cowardice is a weakness in the soul that prevents a person from advancing to what he dislikes. This cowardice is a despicable psychological trait. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to seek refuge from it because of the hesitation it causes regarding what one should advance to. Therefore, it was a despicable trait. And when we apply these descriptions, we find that they are in the hypocrites, not the believers. The believer eats in one intestine, yes, one-third for his food, one-third for his drink, and one-third for his breath. And the believer is the most truthful of people, especially the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions, for Allah described them with truthfulness in His saying:
For the poor emigrants who were expelled from their homes and their properties, seeking bounty from Allah and [His] approval and supporting Allah and His Messenger, [there is also a share]. Those are the truthful.
[Al-Hashr 59:8]
So no one is more truthful than the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions. As for cowardice, this is among the traits of the hypocrites. Therefore, they think every shout is against them. If they hear one person calling for a lost item in the market, they say, "Come, enemy, enemy! Houses, houses! Yes, hide." And they think every shout is against them. And they are also the most lying of people. Therefore, lying is among the signs of the signs of hypocrisy. Yes. And as for their love of the worldly life, there is no doubt that the root of their hypocrisy is for the sake of the worldly life, so that their blood and wealth are protected. If... disbelief, you will be taken. So these descriptions, the ones who said them are the most deserving of them. As for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions, they are the furthest people from them. He says:

The questioner : One intestine, and what is the intestine? They eat in one intestine?

The Shaykh : The intestine is singular; the intestines are plural, and you know what they are—touch your belly and you will find them. Yes, he says:
Awf ibn Malik said, "You have lied."
Al-Mustadrak lil-Hakim 1:206
. He reported something contrary to the reality, and in this is evidence of the obligation to refute lies, whatever the matter may be, and that remaining silent about them is not permissible. Everyone who speaks a lie must be refuted.
Narrated Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri: Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) told us a long narrative about Ad-Dajjal, and among the many things he mentioned, was his saying, "Ad-Dajjal will come and it will be forbidden for him to pass through the entrances of Medina. He will land in some of the salty barren areas (outside) Medina; on that day the best man or one of the best men will come up to him and say, 'I testify that you are the same Dajjal whose description was given to us by Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) .' Ad-Dajjal will say to the people, 'If I kill this man and bring him back to life again, will you doubt my claim?' They will say, 'No.' Then Ad-Dajjal will kill that man and bring him back to life. That man will say, 'Now I know your reality better than before.' Ad-Dajjal will say, 'I want to kill him but I cannot.' " قال : ولكنك منافق لأخبرن عنك رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم
Sahih al-Bukhari 1882
. How did he know he was a hypocrite? Because it is not possible for a man who claims to be a Muslim to use such descriptions regarding the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions unless he is a hypocrite. And by this we know that whoever claims Islam while he insults the Prophet and insults the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is a liar and not a Muslim. For slandering the Companions of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) is not merely a slander against the Companions of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him); it is a slander against them, a slander against the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), a slander against the Shari'ah, and a slander against Allah. Yes. As for it being a slander against them, it is because he cursed them and faulted them. As for it being a slander against the Messenger, it is because his Companions—these whom the slanderers attack—are the ones by whom a person is judged as righteous or sinful, and as having good or bad character, by what? By his companion. And as for it being a slander against the Shari'ah, it is because the intermediaries between us and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in transmitting the Shari'ah are the Companions. And that means, if these people who transmitted it are of this nature, who can trust this Shari'ah? And as for it being a slander against Allah, it is a slander against His wisdom in that He chose for His best of creation the worst of His creation. I seek refuge in Allah. This is a slander, is it not? That Allah chose for the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) these people who, in the eyes of those people, have more right to the cursing and abuse than they do? In any case, there is no doubt that whoever insults the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) is not a believer, but rather a hypocrite if he displays Islam, and a disbeliever if he openly declares his disbelief. For this reason,
He said, "You have lied, but you are a hypocrite; I will inform the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about you." So 'Awf went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to inform him, but he found that the Qur'an had preceded him.
. Where did this come from? From Allah the Exalted, by revelation. And Allah the Exalted is All-Knowing of what they do, All-Knowing of what they intend, and All-Knowing of what they plot. Yes, as Allah the Exalted said about their like:
They conceal [their evil intentions and deeds] from the people, but they cannot conceal [them] from Allah, and He is with them [in His knowledge] when they spend the night in such as He does not accept of speech
[An-Nisa 4:108]
. He says:
So that man who had been saying, "We have not seen anyone like these reciters of ours," came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) after he had departed and mounted his she-camel.
. It appears that this is from the category of explanatory apposition, meaning "he departed," because "departure" means mounting the saddle, so this is from the category of explanatory apposition.
And he mounted his she-camel, saying, "O Messenger of Allah, we were only joking and talking about the talk of travelers to pass the time."

The student: ... we departed ...

The Shaykh : Or others ...
The student: ...

The Shaykh : No, no, it is not moving, unless "he departed from such-and-such to such-and-such" is specified.
The student: Apposition, meaning he said "he departed" ...

The Shaykh : No, no, he is in his place, but he may have mounted the camel.
He said, "We were joking and talking about the talk of travelers to pass the time."
. But what a bad thing they did! Did they not see that the only thing the travelers did was insult the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions?! Yes, but, may Allah protect us from that, it was hypocrisy. Otherwise, the world is full of talk that cuts the traveler's journey, because conversation, especially with your companions and loved ones, undoubtedly passes the time, lightens the burden of travel, and shortens the distance, meaning the time passes quickly. So they said, "This is what we want." But are they sincere in that?
The student: No.

The Shaykh : They were not sincere. If they say, "We bear witness that you are the Messenger of Allah," and Allah the Exalted says:
And Allah knows that you are His Messenger, and Allah testifies that the hypocrites are liars.
[Al-Munafiqun 63:1]
, there is no one more lying than the hypocrite. So they are liars. They undoubtedly intended to insult the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions.
