The reader: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) transmitted in the context of the hadiths in the chapter on the prohibition of listening to backbiting: "Regarding Ka'b ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) in his long hadith about the story of his repentance, which has already been mentioned in the chapter on repentance. It is stated:Riyad as-Salihin 1530 Agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim".
The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) said in his book *Riyad al-Salihin*, in the chapter on the prohibition of listening to backbiting, regarding what he transmitted about Ka'b ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) in the story of his repentance. Ka'b was one of those who lagged behind in the expedition to Tabuk without an excuse, and they were three men: Murarah ibn al-Rabi', Hilal ibn Umayyah, and Ka'b ibn Malik. They lagged behind the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) without an excuse. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) returned from Tabuk, those with excuses came to him to offer their excuses, saying, "By Allah, we were unable to do otherwise," and they swore oaths to that effect. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) accepted their excuses and left their inner thoughts to Allah. As for Ka'b ibn Malik and his two companions, they spoke the truth and said, "We lagged behind without an excuse." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered the Muslims to boycott them, and the Muslims boycotted them, to the extent that a man among them would greet them and no one would return the greeting. Even Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) would come and greet the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), saying: "I did not know whether he moved his lips to return the greeting or not". They remained in this state for forty-eight days, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered their wives to separate from them. The women went to their families, except for the wives of Hilal ibn Umayyah and Murarah ibn al-Rabi', who remained with them because they needed them. As for Ka'b, his wife went to her family. This is the wonderful and great story in which Allah the Exalted revealed a verse from the Book of Allah that is recited, and whoever recites it is rewarded with ten good deeds for each letter. That is, the virtue is such that if a person's history in his life is recited by Muslims, they receive ten good deeds for every letter. So Allah the Exalted said:[At-Tawbah 9:118] At Tabuk, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting and asked about Ka'b, and a man from among the people said, "O Messenger of Allah, he is "occupied with his sandals and looking at his heels". However, this statement made by this man is undoubtedly backbiting, as it mentioned Ka'b with what he dislikes. But Allah guided the one who defended him, saying that he knew of him nothing but good, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent. It is derived from this that it is obligatory for a person, when he hears someone backbiting another, to restrain the backbiting and strive to silence the backbiter, either by force if he is able, by saying, "Be silent, fear Allah, be mindful of Allah," or by effective advice. If he does not do so, he should stand up and leave the place. Because if a person sits in a gathering where the people are backbiting about the people of good and righteousness, it is obligatory for him first to defend them. If he is unable to do so, he must leave, otherwise he will be a partner with them in the sin. And success is from Allah.

The Prophet (ﷺ) was sitting among the people in Tabuk. He (ﷺ) said, "What happened to Ka'b bin Malik?" A person from the tribe of Banu Salamah said: "O Messenger of Allah! the embellishment of his cloak and an appreciation of his sides have allured him, and he was thus detained." Mu'adh bin Jabal (May Allah be pleased with him) said: "Woe be upon you! You have passed indecent remarks. O Messenger of Allah! by Allah, we know nothing about him but good." The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) remained silent.
The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
