Explanation of the author's statement: "So we seek intercession with Allah on your behalf, and with you on behalf of Allah." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Glory be to Allah!"

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh :"His measure, if it is said that the sword is sharper than the stick" If I said, "By Allah, I have a sword with a cutting edge that is sharper than so-and-so's stick and so-and-so's stick... is this one sharp or not? Here"
The student: No.

The Shaykh : I say this stick is not sharp... no, it is not sharp. This sword is now considered a defective, poor sword. How can you say it is sharper than the stick? Therefore, purifying Allah from being likened to creation can be said to fall within our statement of purifying Allah from every deficiency and flaw.
And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) glorified Allah here, as I said, out of magnifying the matter and rebuking the man, and purifying Allah (Mighty and Majestic) from what is not befitting Him.
He kept glorifying فما زال يُسبح
He said, "Glory be to Allah, Glory be to Allah, Glory be to Allah"
till the effect of that was apparent in the faces حتى عرف ذلك في وجوه
Sunan Abi Dawud 4726Da'if (Al-Albani)
in my view,
of his Companions صِحابه

The student: His Companions

The Shaykh :
his Companions أصحابه
his Companions أصحابه
Then he said, "O woe to you," to the end of it.

The questioner : We have...

The Shaykh : (peace and blessings be upon him):
"Glory be to God, glory be to God," and he continued declaring God's glory سبحان الله سبحان الله فما زال يسبح
Mishkat al-Masabih 5727
We have known previously that "ma zaala" is from the verbs of continuity. When "ma" enters it, it indicates continuity, like His saying (Glorified and Exalted is He):
but they will not cease to differ. (119) Except whom your Lord has given mercy وما يزالون مختلفين إلا من رحِم ربك
[Hud 11:118-119]
And its verb "a'mala" (worked) raises the subject and accusses the predicate, and the clause
He was glorifying يُسبح
"he was glorifying" is the predicate.
he continued declaring His glory till the effect of that was apparent in the faces of his Companions فما زال يسبح حتى عُرف ذلك في وجوه أصحابه
Sunan Abi Dawud 4726Da'if (Al-Albani)
That became evident عرف ذلك
Meaning, its effect was known; the effect of this glorification was known in the faces of his Companions, and they were affected by it due to the abundance of the Messenger's (peace and blessings be upon him) glorification, because they knew that the Messenger (may Allah's prayer and peace be upon him) does not glorify and repeat the glorification except for a great matter. The aspect of the glorification here is that the man mentioned a phrase containing some disparagement of Allah the Exalted, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) glorified his Lord, purifying Him from what this word implies. For this reason,
The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions, when they were traveling and descended into a valley, would glorify كان الرسول عليه الصلاة والسلام وأصحابه في السفر إذا هبطوا واديا سبحوا
purifying Allah the Exalted from the lowliness that was among their characteristics, and when they were arrogant, they became proud, magnifying Allah (Mighty and Majestic), and that Allah the Exalted is the One to whom belongs majesty in the heavens and the earth. "Then he said" means the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Woe to you! Do you know how great Allah is? ويحك أتدري ما الله
Sunan Abi Dawud 4726Da'if (Al-Albani)
O woe to you ويحك
This "wayh" is a word in the accusative case with a deleted operator. Sometimes it is attached and said as "wayhaka," and sometimes it is separated from attachment and said as "wayh laka." Sometimes it is raised and sometimes it is accussed. As for its being raised, it is as a subject, so it is said "wayhu" or "wayh lahu." And the accusative is based on the estimation of a deleted verb, the estimation being "May Allah oblige you, wayhaka." And it is like "wayl," "wayd," and "wayf," all of which are said. "Wayl," "wayh," "wayd," and "wayf" have similar meanings. But some scholars of language say: "Wayh" is a word of compassion, and "wayl" is a word of threat. So the meaning of "wayhaka" is that I have compassion for you and I am concerned for you. And some say, no, they are all words indicating warning. So according to the view that distinguishes between "wayl" and "wayh," "wayh" here means to have compassion for this man, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) glorified Allah from his saying, this repeated glorification, so they had compassion for him, as if they pitied him because he did something great.
And his saying:
Do you know what Allah is? أتدري ما الله
This is an interrogative sentence. So what is intended by the interrogation? The intention of the interrogation is magnification. The intention is magnification, meaning that the affair of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) is great, as He clarified afterwards. It is also possible that the meaning is
Do you know what Allah is? أتدري ما الله
meaning, you do not know what Allah is, but you are ignorant of Him. So the intention of the interrogation here is negation. And his saying:
What Allah is ما الله
This is also an interrogative sentence, and it suspends
Do you know تدري
from acting, because "dara" (know) takes two objects, but it is suspended from acting by the interrogation, and the clause becomes in the position of the accusative, filling the place of the two objects of "tadri" (you know).
Then the Messenger (may Allah's prayer and peace be upon him) said:
Allah’s state is greater than that. إن شأن الله أعظم من ذلك
Sunan Abi Dawud 4726Da'if (Al-Albani)
Indeed, the affair of Allah إن شأن الله
Meaning, his command, meaning his greatness and his majesty.
Is greater than that أعظم من ذلك
Meaning, from what you imagined, where you brought this phrase.
We seek intercession with Allah on your behalf نستشفع بالله عليك
Then he said:
Allah is not to be sought as intercessor with anyone إنه لا يستشفع بالله على أحد
Sunan Abi Dawud 4726Da'if (Al-Albani)
Why? Because of the perfection of His greatness and majesty. The intercessor is usually lower in rank than the one for whom intercession is sought. So if you seek intercession with Allah against someone, it means that you have lowered the rank of Allah below the rank of that person for whom intercession is sought. And this is undoubtedly a deficiency in tawhid (the oneness of Allah).
He said, "And he mentioned the hadith" meaning, its completion. "Narrated by Abu Dawud" And this hadith has weakness in it, but its meaning is correct, and that it is not permissible for anyone to say, "I seek intercession with Allah against you." If you said, "Did the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) not say:
and if anyone asks you (for something) for Allah’s sake, give him من سألكم بالله فأعطوه
Sunan Abi Dawud 5109Sahih (Al-Albani)
Whoever asks you by Allah من سألكم بالله
And this is evidence for the permissibility of asking by Allah, because if asking by Allah were not permissible, giving would not be obligatory. So how do we combine asking by Allah and seeking intercession with Allah? It is said that the combination is that asking by Allah does not necessitate that the rank of the one asked by is lower than the rank of the one asked, unlike seeking intercession. Rather, it indicates that the rank of the one asked by is... a great rank, such that when asked by him, he is given. However, some scholars say:
Whoever asks you by Allah من سألكم بالله
Meaning, whoever asks you a question in accordance with the Shari'ah of Allah.
Give to him فأعطوه
And the meaning is not "whoever says, I ask you by Allah." But the first meaning is more correct. And something similar came in the saying of the angel, "I ask you by the One who gave you the good color and wealth," so he asked by Allah.
