(A Refutation of Those Who Say That Allah Has No Wisdom or Will) And likewise they said: He has no wisdom*** which is the ultimate goal of order and perfection; there is nothing but will

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : These four verses are also regarding their statement about the wisdom of Allah (Mighty and Majestic). They say that Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) has no wisdom. That means, if they deny wisdom to Allah, with what do they describe Him? With foolishness, because that is the opposite of wisdom. So they say that Allah has no wisdom. Why? They say because wisdom is a purpose that motivates action, and Allah (Mighty and Majestic) has no purpose; He is free from purpose. Therefore, among their ... false words, they say: "Allah is free from parts, attributes, and purposes". They mean by "parts" the face, the hand, the eye, and the like. Allah is free from this. And by "attributes" they mean the qualities; He is free from the qualities, because the qualities are attributes that do not exist except in bodies. And by "purposes" they mean wisdom; Allah has no wisdom; He does things merely by will. Yes, just like anyone ... who drinks sweet water and bitter water. For every thing, why did you do it? This ... this ... is this sound or not sound? Not sound. They say that Allah does all things, creates fire and Paradise, punishes this one, honors this one, and the like, without wisdom, but merely by will. He willed to do it, so He did it. Why? He remains silent like this: He willed. Even though the Qur'an and the Sunnah are full of affirming wisdom for Allah (Mighty and Majestic), whether in His actions or in His legislation. This is in addition to His name al-Hakim (The Wise) and in addition to His description with wisdom, as He said:
Extensive wisdom - but warning does not avail [them]. حكمة بالغة فما تغن النذر
[Al-Qamar 54:5]
. Allah the Exalted, when He mentioned inheritance, said:
Allah makes clear to you [His law], lest you go astray يبين الله لكم أن تضلوا
[An-Nisa 4:176]
. And the third is in matters of divine decree; Allah (Mighty and Majestic) made clear that He did them for a great wisdom:
And out of His mercy He made for you the night and the day ومن رحمته جعل لكم الليل والنهار
[Al-Qasas 28:73]
. For what? For what reason?
that you may rest therein and [by day] seek from His bounty لتسكنوا فيه ولتبتغوا من فضله
[Al-Qasas 28:73]
. So His cosmic and decreed rulings are all coupled with wisdom. So whoever among you wishes to be upright, yes:
so whoever wills may take to his Lord a way. فمن شاء اتخذ إلى ربه سبيلا
[Al-Muzzammil 73:19]
And you do not will except that Allah wills. Indeed, Allah is ever Knowing and Wise. وما تشاءون إلا أن يشاء الله إن الله كان عليماً حكيماً
[Al-Insan 76:30]
. And there is no doubt that Allah (Mighty and Majestic) is described with wisdom, and that His cosmic, decreed, and legislative rulings are coupled with wisdom as well. We do not know of any actions from which wisdom is absent except that they are actions of foolishness. Because when they fled from affirming wisdom, they fell into an evil worse than what they fled from, which is the claim of foolishness. This is a necessary consequence for them. And with their statement that it is merely will, they said that this will ... is not His attribute, so He is not described as "One Who Wills." Based on what? Based on their principle of denying attributes. They said He has no wisdom, but merely will. Then they said He does not have will either, but rather will is not an attribute of Him. Listen to the author's words: "This, and that will is not His attribute*** but rather His essence or His action". Because will is either His essence, meaning He exists by His essence, not by His attribute, or the intended meaning of will is the willed thing, meaning the action that is the acted-upon.
