The Method of Ritual Slaughter for Livestock

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question: What is the Shari'ah method of slaughter, and specifically the method for slaughtering camels?

Answer: The Shari'ah method of slaughter for camels, sheep, and cattle is for the slaughterer to cut the windpipe, the esophagus, and the two carotid arteries, which are the two vessels surrounding the neck. This is the most complete and best form of slaughter. The windpipe is the passage for breath, the esophagus is the passage for food and drink, and the carotid arteries are the two vessels surrounding the neck. If the slaughterer cuts them, the blood flows out more abundantly. If these four are cut, the slaughter is lawful according to all scholars.
The second case is cutting the windpipe, the esophagus, and one of the carotid arteries. This is also lawful, valid, and good, though it is less than the first.
The third case is cutting only the windpipe and the esophagus, without the carotid arteries. This is also valid, and a group of scholars held this view. Their evidence is the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
what would make blood flow (slaughter) and you can eat what is slaughtered and the Name of Allah is mentioned at the time of slaughtering. But don't use teeth or fingernailsما أنهر الدم، وذكر اسم الله عليه، فكلوا، ليس السن والظفر
Sahih al-Bukhari 2507
, and this is the preferred position in this issue.
The Sunnah is to slaughter camels while they are standing on three legs, with their left foreleg tied, by stabbing them in the chest area between the neck and the breast.
As for cattle and sheep, the Sunnah is to slaughter them while they are lying on their left side. It is also the Sunnah, when slaughtering or performing the slaughter of camels, to face the animal toward the qiblah. This is not obligatory, but only a Sunnah. If one slaughters or performs the slaughter facing other than the qiblah, the meat is lawful. Likewise, if one performs the camel slaughter on an animal meant for regular slaughter, or slaughters an animal meant for camel slaughter, it is lawful, but that is contrary to the Sunnah. And success is from Allah.

Question: Is there a specific place on the neck?

Answer: Yes, the entire neck is a place for slaughter, both the upper and lower parts. However, for camels, the Sunnah is to slaughter them in the chest area. As for cattle and sheep, the Sunnah is to slaughter them at the top of the neck, so that the windpipe, esophagus, and carotid arteries are cut, as mentioned earlier.
