The Lawful Slaughter

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Two letters, Your Eminence, ask about lawful slaughter. The first is from our brother Hasan ibn Ali from Bahrain, and the second is from Sudan—Kassala—and its sender is our brother Sulayman Misdah. He asks about the method of slaughtering camels specifically, and about lawful slaughter?
Answer: Lawful slaughter for camels, cattle, and sheep is that the slaughterer cuts the windpipe, the esophagus, and the two carotid arteries, which are the two vessels surrounding the neck. These are four things. This is the complete prescribed method, the most complete and best slaughter is to cut the windpipe and the esophagus. The windpipe is the passage for breath, and the esophagus is the passage for food and drink. The carotid arteries are two vessels surrounding the neck. If they are cut, the blood flows out more. If these four are cut, the slaughter is lawful according to all scholars.
The second case: that he cuts the windpipe, the esophagus, and one of the carotid arteries. This is also lawful, valid, and good, even though it is less than the first.
The third: that he cuts only the windpipe and the esophagus, without the carotid arteries. This is also valid, and a group of scholars have said this. It is covered by his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
If the killing tool causes blood to gush out and if Allah's Name is mentioned, eat (of the slaughterer animal). But do not slaughter with a tooth or a nail.ما أنهر الدم وذكر اسم الله عليه فكل ليس السن والظفر
Sahih al-Bukhari 5498
.
This is the preferred position in this issue. Some scholars have said: that slaughter becomes lawful by cutting only the carotid arteries, without the windpipe and esophagus. There is a consideration in this, and the closest and most apparent is what was mentioned before, which has three characteristics:
The first characteristic, the complete one: that he cuts the four.
The second: which is less than it but is good, that he cuts the windpipe, the esophagus, and one of the carotid arteries.
The third: that he limits it to the windpipe and esophagus, without the carotid arteries. This is also a valid slaughter, and it achieves the objective. As for limiting it to the carotid arteries without the windpipe and esophagus, or the carotid arteries with the windpipe, or with the esophagus, there is a consideration and disagreement in this, and I have not clarified the aspect of that. Yes.
The presenter: May Allah reward you. This is regarding sheep and cattle, but what about camels?
The Shaykh: And camels are the same, but camels are slaughtered by stabbing in the hollow between the base of the neck and the chest, so that the windpipe, esophagus, and carotid arteries are all cut. As for cattle and sheep, they are slaughtered with a knife, by cutting, not by stabbing. Yes.
The presenter: May Allah reward you. Is there a specific place on the neck?
The Shaykh: Yes, between... meaning the entire neck is a place for slaughter.
The presenter: The entire neck?
The Shaykh: The entire neck, yes, its top and its bottom. But for camels, it is in the hollow at the bottom of the neck, between the chest and the neck, the settled hollow. Yes.
The presenter: So those who say that slaughter must be in the area closest to the head are wrong?
The Shaykh: No, it is not obligatory, it is not correct. Yes.
The presenter: May Allah reward you.
