The Ruling on Borrowing from Forbidden Wealth

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question: Is it permissible for me to borrow from a person whose trade is known to be forbidden, and who engages in forbidden matters?

Answer: It is not advisable for you, my brother, to borrow from this person or to deal with him, as long as his transactions are forbidden, and he is known for engaging in forbidden interest-based transactions or others. You are not permitted to deal with him, nor to borrow from him; rather, it is obligatory for you to purify yourself from that and stay away from it. However, if he deals in both forbidden and permissible matters—meaning his transactions are mixed, containing both the good and the bad—then there is no harm, but leaving it is better. This is based on his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
Leave that which makes you doubt for that which does not make you doubt.دع ما يريبك إلى ما لا يريبك
Sunan an-Nasa'i 5711Sahih (Darussalam)
, and his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
So he, who saves himself from these doubtful things, saves his religion and his honorمن اتقى الشبهات فقد استبرأ لدينه وعرضه
Bulugh al-Maram 16:32
, and his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
and sin is what fluctuates in your chest, and you would hate that the people discovered it about you.الإثم ما حاك في نفسك، وكرهت أن يطلع عليه الناس
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2389Sahih (Darussalam)
.
The believer stays away from doubtful matters. So, if you know that all his transactions are forbidden, and that he trades in forbidden matters, then such a person should not be dealt with, nor should one borrow from him.
