Question: I went to Hajj with my father, and we found money amounting to 2,250 Saudi Riyals near the middle Jamarat. My father donated it to his mosque. What is the ruling on that?
Answer: It is obligatory for the one who finds lost property in the Haram not to donate it to a mosque or any other place, but rather to announce it continuously in the Haram, saying: "Who is the owner of these dirhams?" Because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sahih Muslim 1355a, so it must not be spent on any of the public benefits, but rather it must be announced until its owner comes.
And if the finder is unable to announce it, he must hand it over to the court in Makkah, or to the body prepared for this purpose, and his conscience is cleared until its people come and ask about it.
