The father of your former husband is a mahram to you
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question: Your Eminence, the father, Abdul Aziz ibn Abdullah ibn Baz, may Allah preserve him and grant you well-being.
Peace be upon you, and Allah’s mercy and blessings. After that:
A woman asks and says: I married a man and bore children from him, then he divorced me and kept the children, placing them with his father. I need to visit my children at the house of my former husband’s father, so I go to them from time to time and see this man, and I go accompanied by my current husband, who does not object to this. However, my brothers try to prevent me, and some of them say that my former husband’s father is no longer a mahram to me. I ask:
First: Did the mahram status of this man toward me end with my divorce from his son, or did it not?
Second: If it did not end and he is a mahram to me, does he have a right to maintain ties and visit me?
Third: Is there any harm in my going to them and seeing this man, who is the grandfather of my children, if I need to do so, especially since I do not see my former husband, as he has married and settled in another place?
Please issue a ruling on this, and may Allah reward you with good and grant you well-being and preserve you.
Answer: And upon you be peace, the mercy of Allah, and His blessings. After that: There is no harm in you seeing the father of your former husband, because he is a mahram to you even if his son divorced you. Visiting him at appropriate times with your husband or your mahram is appropriate, if he is a person of righteousness and good. Likewise, if you visit him alone, provided his home is nearby and does not require travel or expense, on the condition that your husband is pleased with it. May Allah guide everyone to what pleases Him, and peace be upon you, the mercy of Allah, and His blessings.
