The *Maksar* is an evil and an injustice

Question: Your Eminence, Shaykh Abdul Aziz ibn Abdullah ibn Baz (may Allah preserve him).
Peace be upon you, and Allah’s mercy and blessings. After that:
In some villages in the south, when a man marries off his daughter or a female relative outside the village, he pays a sum of money, namely two thousand riyals (2000 riyals), called the *maksar*, so that they will go with him to the wedding. He pays it under compulsion; if he does not pay this amount, the men and women will not go with him, and the invitation to attend the wedding feast will not be accepted. Whoever goes with him is punished with a monetary fine determined by the group, and is considered a rebel against the village community. It is known that this amount may be taken by the father of the bride from her bridal gift, which is the usual case, or he may pay it from his own money.
So what is your guidance regarding this matter, and what is the ruling on the group taking this amount in exchange for going with him to the village where the daughter was married, whether her father takes this amount from the daughter's bridal gift or pays it from his own money to the group? It is known that the one who pays that amount is compelled to do so, but in order for his group to go with him, he pays this amount. Please issue a ruling for us, may Allah reward you with good.
Answer: And upon you be peace and the mercy of Allah and His blessings, and after that:
This custom is an evil and an injustice, and it is obligatory to abandon it; because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sahih Muslim 1718b. So it is obligatory for the group to repent to Allah from that, to cooperate in righteousness and piety, and not to cooperate in sin and aggression. We ask Allah for guidance for everyone, success in all good, and safety from the customs of the pre-Islamic age of ignorance. Indeed, He is the All-Hearing, the Near.
And peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.
