The Ruling on Breastfeeding a Child After the Age of Two

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question: When does breastfeeding become forbidden with five feedings, and when does it become forbidden with a single feeding?

Answer: Breastfeeding does not become forbidden unless it consists of five feedings while the child is within the first two years. As for if the breastfeeding is less than five feedings, or if it occurs after the child has passed the age of two, then this has no basis and is not considered forbidden.
So two conditions are necessary:
The first is that the child, at the time of breastfeeding, has not completed the age of two.
The number of breastfeedings must be five, no fewer; this is because authentic hadiths have come regarding this, including his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
Suckling applies only (to infants) during the first two years (of their life).لا رضاع إلا في الحولين
Bulugh al-Maram 8:198
, and Allah the Exalted says:
Mothers may breastfeed their children two complete yearsوَالْوَالِدَاتُ يُرْضِعْنَ أَوْلاَدَهُنَّ حَوْلَيْنِ كَامِلَيْنِ
[al-Baqarah: 233], and his saying (peace and blessings be upon him) to Sahlah bint Sahl:
Breastfeed Salim five feedings and you will be forbidden to himأرضعي سالمًا خمس رضعات تحرمي عليه
, and what is established in the authentic collections from 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her), who said: "It was among what was revealed in the Qur'an that ten known breastfeedings make a woman a mahram, then they were abrogated by five known breastfeedings, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away while the matter remained as it was." It was not abrogated and did not change.
Five known feedings, established by the testimony of a just man or a just woman or more. If the wet nurse is just and admits to five feedings within the two years, her testimony is accepted. So it is necessary that they be five, and it is necessary that they be within the two years, and it is necessary that the one claiming this be a just or trustworthy woman, or a man who testifies that the woman is just and trustworthy, or more than that.
