The questioner : This questioner, Abu Yasser, says: The Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him) holds that the night begins from the setting of the sun until the rising of the sun, and consequently, the last third of the night continues until the sunrise. Is this correct?
The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow them with excellence until the Day of Judgment:
The linguists differed regarding when the day begins:
Some of them said that it begins with the appearance of the dawn, because the rays of the sun and its light begin from the appearance of the dawn and end with the setting of the sun.
And some of them said: The day begins from the rising of the sun, and they agreed that it ends with the setting of the sun.
And what appears is that the Shari'ah day begins with the appearance of the dawn, due to the saying of Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) regarding fasting:[Al-Baqarah 2:187] meaning until the setting of the sun.
As for in the Arabic language, and it also appears in the astronomical terminology, the day begins from the rising of the sun to its setting, so the light preceding it, which begins with the appearance of the dawn, is not considered, nor is the light following it when it sets.
