Is it part of da'wah for the caller to mention to the one being called some of the sins he has committed for the purpose of reconciliation?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : Sometimes, when a caller comes to someone he is inviting, he may mention sins that the person has committed in order to reconcile him. Is this prescribed?

The Shaykh : No, it is not prescribed. If you mention his sins to him before he accepts you, he will be repelled by you. Rather, mention to him what will soften his heart and make him accept you.

The questioner : ...

The Shaykh : Then, once he turns to you and approaches you, explain to him the sins he was committing. Do not come to a person you are advising and say to him: "You drink intoxicants, and whoever drinks intoxicants in this world will not drink them in the Hereafter. You commit zina, and zina is an abomination and an evil path."

The questioner : ... The caller himself mentions his own sins, saying, "I used to..."

The Shaykh : This falls under the category of speaking about Allah's blessings. If he sees it appropriate, there is no harm in it. This is similar to what happened with Thumamah and with 'Amr ibn al-'As (may Allah be pleased with him) when he embraced Islam. He stated that if he had been able to reach the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he would have killed him, and that his face was the most hateful of faces to him. This was by way of speaking about his past.
