The reciter: Isma'il ibn Ibrahim al-Hanazali, Muhammad ibn Rafi', and 'Abd ibn Humayd narrated to us, and the wording is that of Ibn Rafi'. Ibn Rafi' said: He narrated to us. The other two said: 'Abd al-Razzaq informed us. Ma'mar informed us from al-Zuhri from Urwah that Usamah ibn Zayd informed him:
That the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) rode a donkey on which was a saddle with a Fadak woolen blanket underneath it, and he placed Usamah behind him. He was visiting Sa'd ibn Ubadah in the tribe of Banu al-Harith ibn al-Khazraj, and this was before the Battle of Badr. He passed by a gathering that included a mix of Muslims, polytheists who worshipped idols, and Jews. Among them was 'Abdullah ibn Ubayy, and in the gathering was 'Abdullah ibn Rawahah. When the dust of the mount covered the gathering, 'Abdullah ibn Ubayy covered his nose with his cloak and said, "Do not raise dust over us." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) greeted them, then stopped and dismounted. He called them to Allah and recited the Qur'an to them. 'Abdullah ibn Ubayy said, "O man, there is nothing better than this. If what you say is true, do not annoy us in our gatherings. Return to your camp, and whoever comes to you from us, tell him about it." 'Abdullah ibn Rawahah said, "Visit us in our gatherings, for we love that." The Muslims, the polytheists, and the Jews began to exchange insults until they were about to attack one another. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) continued to calm them down. Then he mounted his animal and went in to Sa'd ibn Ubadah. He said, "O Sa'd, did you not hear what Abu Hubab said?"—meaning 'Abdullah ibn Ubayy. Sa'd said, "So and so." The Prophet said, "Pardon him, O Messenger of Allah, and be magnanimous. By Allah, Allah has given you what He has given you. And the people of this valley had agreed to crown him and bind his head with a turban. But when Allah repelled that with the truth He gave you, he became bitter about it. That is why he did what you saw." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) pardoned him.

The Shaykh : Even though he disliked it, and he placed his cloak over his nose as if to say: This smell is unpleasant. Then he said: If someone wants to come to you and listen, let him come to you in your house. But the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was patient and recited the Qur'an to them.
