"And they did not occupy themselves with what would sever it, and if they separated before it, it is invalid"

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : The time, and they did not occupy themselves with what would sever it. Now, if they separate? He says "If they separate before it, it is invalid". Likewise, if they occupy themselves with what would sever it. This one says, "I hope."
A man said to the groom, "I have married you to my daughter," and the groom remained silent and began drinking coffee and tea. When ten minutes or a quarter of an hour had passed, he said, "I accept." Is it valid or not?

The questioner : It is valid.

The Shaykh : It is valid. Yes, it is valid because he did not occupy himself with what would sever it, and they did not separate from the place. But it is as if the groom, when he was told, "I have married you to my daughter," began to think. At first, he was anxious. When he got what he wanted, he hesitated. This is the nature of a person: he is anxious about a thing until he attains it; when he attains it, it becomes light in his mind. Look at the bird hunters who hunt birds. At first, when he sees the bird, his heart flies with it out of his eagerness to catch it. But when he shoots it and it falls to the ground, it is not worth a feather to him. So, when this groom was told, "I have married you to my daughter," and he was anxious at first, he remained silent for a quarter of an hour, then said, "I accept." We say it is valid. Why? Because the acceptance was in its proper place; they did not separate. Yes, and they did not occupy themselves with what would sever it. If he said, "I have married you to my daughter," and the groom left after this statement, and then came in the afternoon, and this was in the morning, and in the afternoon he came to him and said, "I accept the marriage," is it valid?

The questioner : It is not valid.

The Shaykh : Now, if he said, "Give me time until the afternoon," and he said, "I have given you time until the afternoon," and he came in the afternoon and said, "I accept."

The questioner : It is not valid.

The Shaykh : It is not valid.

The questioner : It is not valid.

The Shaykh : Yes, that is it, once is enough, O servant of Allah. It is not valid. But we say to the guardian, "Repeat the proposal; what is the problem?" Likewise, if he occupies himself with what would sever it, it becomes invalid. That is, when he said, "I have married you to my daughter," he said, "What is the result of the exam today? Did you pass the college?" The guardian said, "Yes, I passed and I saw your name as a failure." No, I want to say I saw you as a success. So, with the joy, he said, "Then I accept the marriage." It is possible that if he had said "failure," he would not have accepted; he would have been upset and not accepted. But he said, "I saw you as a success," and he said, "I accept the marriage." Is it valid?

The questioner : It is not valid.

The Shaykh : The acceptance is not valid. Why? Because he occupied himself with what would sever it. Or, for example, he said to him, "I have married you to my daughter," and he said, "What is the news of Bosnia and Herzegovina today? Perhaps it is news that will please you." He said, "Yes, praise be to Allah, the Muslims have won, and such and such happened." Then he said, "I accept." This is also not valid.
