Explanation of the words of Imam al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) regarding what he quoted: "

The Shaykh : The author (may Allah have mercy on him) stated, in what he quoted from Suhayb al-Rumi, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sahih Muslim 2999 Sahih Ibn Hibban 11:6 .
Then the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) detailed this good affair, saying: : This is the state of the believer. Every person, in the divine decree and destiny of Allah, is between two things: either ease or hardship. People, in facing these occurrences—ease and hardship—are divided into two groups: the believer and the non-believer. As for the believer, whatever Allah has decreed for him is good for him in every state. If hardship befalls him, he is patient; he is patient with the decrees of Allah, he awaits relief from Allah, and he seeks reward from Allah, and that becomes good for him, so he attains the reward of the patient.
And if ease befalls him in the form of a blessing, whether a religious blessing such as knowledge and righteous deeds, or a worldly blessing such as wealth, children, and family, he is grateful; he thanks Allah, and that is by performing the obedience of Allah, for gratitude is not merely the person saying: "I thank Allah," but rather it is performing the obedience of Allah (Mighty and Majestic). So he thanks Allah, and that becomes good for him. He will have two blessings upon him: the blessing of religion and the blessing of the world. The blessing of the world through ease, and the blessing of religion through gratitude. This is the state of the believer; he is in goodness whether he is struck with ease or struck with hardship. As for the disbeliever, he is in evil, and I seek refuge in Allah. He is in evil: if hardship befalls him, he does not have patience; he complains, calls for woe and misery, and curses fate, and curses time, and even curses Allah (Mighty and Majestic), we seek refuge in Allah. And if ease befalls him, he does not thank Allah, so this ease becomes a punishment for him in the Hereafter, for the disbeliever does not eat a meal or drink a drink but that he has a sin in it, even if there is no sin in it for the believer, but for the disbeliever there is a sin. As Allah the Exalted said:[Al-A'raf 7:32] It is exclusively for those who believe, and it is pure for them on the Day of Resurrection. As for those who do not believe, it is not for them, and they eat it as something forbidden to them, and they will be punished for it on the Day of Resurrection. So the disbeliever is in evil, whether hardship or ease befalls him, unlike the believer, who is in goodness.
In this hadith, there is an exhortation to faith, and that the believer is always in goodness and blessing.
In it, there is also an exhortation to patience in hardship, and that this is among the characteristics of the believers. So if you see yourself, when struck with hardship, being patient and seeking reward, awaiting relief from Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He), and seeking reward from Allah, then that is a sign of faith. And if you see the opposite, then fear for yourself, correct your path, and repent to Allah.
In this, there is also an exhortation; in this hadith, there is an exhortation to gratitude in ease, for if a person thanks his Lord for His blessing, that is from the guidance of Allah for him, and it is among the causes of the increase of blessings, as Allah the Exalted said:[Ibrahim 14:7] , and if Allah guides a person to gratitude, this is a blessing that requires it to be thanked a second time. So if he is guided, it is a blessing that requires it to be thanked a third time, for few are those who perform gratitude. So if Allah bestows upon you and helps you with it, this is a blessing. For this reason, some of them said:
"If my gratitude is a blessing of Allah, a blessing *** upon me, then for Him, gratitude is due in its like.
How could gratitude be attained except by His grace? *** Even if the days lengthen and life continues.
And he spoke the truth (may Allah have mercy on him), for if Allah guides you to gratitude, this is a blessing that requires new gratitude. If you are grateful, it is a blessing that requires a second gratitude. If you are grateful, it is a blessing that requires a third gratitude, and so on. But in reality, we are in heedlessness, in heedlessness of this. We ask Allah to awaken our hearts and your hearts, and to rectify our deeds and your deeds. Indeed, He is Generous and Bountiful.
Strange are the ways of a believer for there is good in every affair of his
And this is not the case for anyone except the believer
Then the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) detailed this good affair, saying:
If hardship befalls him, he is patient, and that is good for him; and if ease befalls him, he is grateful, and that is good for him
And if ease befalls him in the form of a blessing, whether a religious blessing such as knowledge and righteous deeds, or a worldly blessing such as wealth, children, and family, he is grateful; he thanks Allah, and that is by performing the obedience of Allah, for gratitude is not merely the person saying: "I thank Allah," but rather it is performing the obedience of Allah (Mighty and Majestic). As Allah the Exalted said:
Say, "Who has forbidden the adornment of Allah which He has produced for His servants and the good [lawful] things of provision?" Say, "They are for those who believe during the worldly life [but] exclusively for them on the Day of Resurrection."
In this hadith, there is an exhortation to faith, and that the believer is always in goodness and blessing.
In it, there is also an exhortation to patience in hardship, and that this is among the characteristics of the believers. And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.' "
If my gratitude is a blessing of Allah, a blessing *** upon me, then for Him, gratitude is due in its like.
