Explanation of the words of Imam al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) regarding what he quoted: "

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : As for the second: it is:
That the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade a person from wishing for death due to a hardship that befalls him
: This is because a person may be struck by a hardship that makes him unable to bear it and causes him fatigue, so he wishes for death, saying: O Lord, kill me, whether he says this with his tongue or in his heart. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade that, saying:
None of you should wish for death because of some harm that befalls him
Sunan an-Nasa'i 1820Sahih (Darussalam)
: It may be better for him, but if you are struck by a hardship, say: O Allah, help me to be patient with it, until Allah helps you and you become patient, and that will be better for you. As for wishing for death, you do not know; perhaps death is worse for you, and it does not bring relief. Not every death is relief, as the poet said:
"Not every one who dies and finds rest is dead".
A person dies, and perhaps he dies to punishment, refuge with Allah, and to the punishment of the grave. And if he remains in this world, perhaps he will seek reconciliation, repent, and return to Allah, and that will be better for him. The important thing is that if a hardship befalls you, do not wish for death. And if the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade a person from wishing for death due to the hardship that befalls him, what about one who kills himself when a hardship befalls him?! There are some fools who, when they are stricken with distress, strangle themselves, or slaughter themselves, or eat poison, or the like. These people have moved from a punishment to a more severe one; they did not find rest, but they moved from a punishment to a more severe one. For the one who kills himself is punished with what he used to kill himself with in the Fire of Hell, remaining and abiding therein forever, as that came from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). If he killed himself with a blade, a dagger, a knife, a nail, or the like, then on the Day of Resurrection in Hell he will stab himself with that blade with which he killed himself. If he killed himself with poison, he will drink it in the Fire of Hell. If he killed himself by throwing himself from a mountain, a mountain will be set up for him in Hell from which he will roll down forever and ever, and so on.
So I say: If the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade a person from wishing for death due to the hardship that befalls him, then the greatest of that is for a person to kill himself and hasten to Allah with his own soul, may Allah grant us safety. But when the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade something, it was his habit, if there was a permissible alternative, to mention the permissible alternative, following the example of the Lord (Mighty and Majestic). Allah the Exalted said:
O you who have believed, say not [to Allah 's Messenger], "Ra'ina" but say, "Unthurna"
[Al-Baqarah 2:104]
: When Allah forbade this word: "Ragana," He showed us the permissible word, saying:
And say "Unzurna"
, and when good dates were brought to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he disapproved of them and said:
What is this? Is the food of Khaybar its dates like this? They said: No, but we sell a sa' of this for two sa' and two sa' for three. He said: Do not do that, but sell the dates ما هذا ؟
meaning the bad ones
for dirhams, and buy with dirhams separately
meaning good dates. So when he forbade it, he showed them the permissible way.
Here he said:
None of you should wish for death due to a hardship that has befallen him. If he must do so, let him say: O Allah, keep me alive as long as You know life is better for me, and let me die when You know death is better for me
As-Sunan al-Kubra lil-Nasa'i 64:1450
: He has opened the door for you, but it is a sound door, because wishing for death indicates a person's irritation and lack of patience with the decree of Allah. But this supplication:
O Allah! Keep me alive as long as life is better for me, and let me die if death is better for me.
Sahih al-Bukhari 5671
