Explanation of the statement of Imam al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) regarding what he quoted: "… The Chapter on Taqwa …"

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "The Chapter on Taqwa". Taqwa is a name derived from protection, meaning that a person takes what protects him from the punishment of Allah. What protects you from the punishment of Allah is doing the commands of Allah and avoiding His prohibitions. Indeed, this is what protects one from the punishment of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: taking hold of the commands of Allah and leaving what He has forbidden.
Know that taqwa is sometimes paired with righteousness, and it is said: "righteousness and taqwa", as in the saying of Allah the Exalted:
cooperate in righteousness and piety وتعاونوا على البر والتقوى
[Al-Ma'idah 5:2]
. And sometimes it is mentioned alone. When it is paired with righteousness, righteousness becomes doing the commands, and taqwa becomes leaving the prohibitions. When it is mentioned alone, it becomes comprehensive, covering both doing the commands and avoiding the prohibitions.
Allah the Exalted mentioned in His Book that Paradise has been prepared for those who fear Allah. So the people of taqwa are the people of Paradise. May Allah make us and you among them. Therefore, it is obligatory for a person to fear Allah, Mighty and Majestic, in obedience to His command, seeking His reward, and seeking safety from His punishment.
