The Shaykh : The mention of the eyes, and Allah knows best, is by way of example. Otherwise, the nose may err, and the mouth may err. A person may speak words that are forbidden, and he may smell things he has no right to smell. But the eyes were mentioned because most errors occur in looking. Therefore, when a person washes his face in wudu, the sins of his eyes go out. When he washes his hands, the sins of his hands go out. When he washes his feet, the sins of his feet go out, until he is pure from sins. For this reason, Allah the Exalted said when He mentioned wudu, ghusl, and tayammum:
Allah does not intend to make difficulty for you, but He intends to purify you مَا يُرِيدُ اللَّهُ لِيَجْعَلَ عَلَيْكُمْ مِنْ حَرَجٍ وَلَكِنْ يُرِيدُ لِيُطَهِّرَكُمْ
[Al-Ma'idah 5:6]
meaning outwardly and inwardly, in form and in meaning.
and complete His favor upon you that you may be grateful. وَلِيُتِمَّ نِعْمَتَهُ عَلَيْكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَشْكُرُونَ
[Al-Ma'idah 5:6]
A person should, when he performs wudu, be aware of this meaning, namely that his wudu serves as expiation for his sins, so that through this wudu he seeks reward from Allah (Mighty and Majestic). And success is from Allah.
