The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) said in the chapter on the abundance of the means of good, quoting from Jabir ibn 'Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both), that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned that whoever plants a plant, and something from a human, an animal, a bird, or otherwise eats from it, or it is diminished or stolen from it, then it is charity for him. In this hadith, there is an encouragement to sow and to plant, and that sowing and planting contain much good, with benefit in religion and benefit in this world. As for the benefit in this world, it is the production that is obtained from it. The benefit of planting and sowing is not like the benefit of money and coins, because sowing and planting benefit the sower and planter himself and the entire country; the whole country benefits from it by buying the fruit, buying the grain, and eating from it. This leads to the enrichment of the community and the increase of its good, unlike money; money is deposited in boxes and no one benefits from it. But planting and sowing are benefited from by the people of the country, and by the sower and planter himself as well. As for the religious benefits, if a bird, a sparrow, a pigeon, a hen, or anything else eats from it, even if it is only one grain, it is charity for him, whether he intended it or not. Even if it is assumed that when the person planted or sowed, this matter was not on his mind, then when it is eaten from, it becomes charity for him. More amazing than that is if a thief steals from it; for example, if a person comes to my date palm and steals dates from it, I have a reward in that, even though if I knew about this thief, I would take him to the court. And yet, Allah the Exalted records for me charity for this theft until the Day of Resurrection. Likewise, whatever falls to the ground from it and is eaten by ants and insects is charity for its owner. In this hadith, there is a clear indication of the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) encouragement to sow and plant because of the religious benefit and the worldly benefits it contains. It is also evidence of the abundance of the means of good, and that whatever good people benefit from, its owner has a reward and good in it, whether he intended it or not. This is like the saying of Allah the Exalted:
No good is there in much of their private conversation, except for those who enjoin charity or that which is right or conciliation between people. And whoever does that seeking means to the approval of Allah - then We are going to give him a great reward.
[An-Nisa 4:114]
So Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, mentioned that there is good in these things whether you intended it or not. Whoever commands charity, it is good; or does a favor, it is good; or reconciles between people, it is good, whether he intended it or not. If he intended it seeking the Face of Allah, Allah says:
We will bestow upon him a great reward. فَسَوْفَ نُؤْتِيهِ أَجْراً عَظِيماً
[An-Nisa 4:74]
And in this is evidence that if people benefit from benefits and utilities, they are good for their owner and a reward, even if he did not intend it. If he intended it, he adds good upon good, and Allah the Exalted gives him from His bounty a great reward. I ask Allah to grant me and you sincerity and following the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). Indeed, He is Generous and Bountiful.
