Ruling on Reciting (Ya Sin) at the Grave and Planting Trees on It

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: After the burial of the deceased, some people recite from the mushaf Surat (Ya Sin) at the grave, and they place plants on the grave, such as cactus, and they plant the surface of the grave with barley or wheat, claiming that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) placed that on the graves of two of his Companions. What is the ruling on that?
H. Al-Dammam

A: It is not prescribed to recite Surat (Ya Sin) or any other part of the Qur'an at the grave after burial or during burial, nor is it prescribed to recite in the graves; because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not do that, nor did his Rightly Guided Caliphs. Likewise, it is not prescribed to recite the adhan or the iqamah in the grave; rather, all of that is a religious innovation (bid'ah). It is authentically narrated from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
He who did any act for which there is no sanction from our behalf, that is to be rejected.من عمل عملا ليس عليه أمرنا فهو رد
Sahih Muslim 1718b
It was narrated by Imam Muslim in his Sahih.
Likewise, it is not prescribed to plant trees on the graves, neither cactus nor anything else, nor to plant them with barley or wheat or anything else; because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not do that in the graves, nor did his Rightly Guided Caliphs.
As for what he did with the two graves, regarding which Allah revealed to him their punishment, of planting the palm branch, that was specific to him (peace and blessings be upon him) and to those two graves; because he did not do that with any others. It is not permissible for the Muslims to innovate any act of worship that Allah has not prescribed, due to the aforementioned hadith, and due to the saying of Allah, the Exalted:
Or have they other deities who have ordained for them a religion to which Allah has not consented?أَمْ لَهُمْ شُرَكَاءُ شَرَعُوا لَهُمْ مِنَ الدِّينِ مَا لَمْ يَأْذَنْ بِهِ اللَّهُ
[Ash-Shuraa 42:21]
The verse [Al-Shura: 21]. And success is from Allah.
