Explanation of the words of Imam al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) regarding what he quoted: "

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : He seeks forgiveness for his sin, but instead of saying, “O Allah, forgive me my sin” or “what I have committed,” he goes and curses himself with that very sin for which he intended to seek Allah’s forgiveness. Likewise, he may intend to ask Allah for Paradise but ends up asking for the Fire, or he may intend to ask his Lord for guidance but ends up asking for misguidance, and so on. For this reason, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded him to sleep. Among the wisdom of this is that a person has a right over himself; if he forces himself to perform worship while suffering hardship, he has wronged himself. So, my brother, do not be extreme by falling short, nor do you be extreme by going to excess. As for the hadith of Jabir ibn Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him), he said:
I have prayed with the Prophet (ﷺ) إنه صلى مع النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم
Sahih al-Bukhari 7252
It appears that he is referring to the Friday prayer.
and his prayer was moderate in length and his Khutbah was moderate in length. فكانت صلاته قصدًا وخطبته قصدًا
Sunan an-Nasa'i 1582Sahih (Darussalam)
The intention is the moderate approach, which involves neither a relaxation that is defective nor a heaviness that is tedious. It is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
The lengthening of prayer by a man and the shortness of the sermon is the sign of his understanding (of faith). إن طول صلاة الرجل وقصر خطبته مئنة من فقهه
Sahih Muslim 869
This is a sign of his understanding and evidence for it. Therefore, the important point is that it is derived from these two hadiths that a person should not burden himself or make things difficult for himself in worship, but rather he should take what he is able to bear. And success is from Allah.
