Explanation of the words of Imam al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) regarding what he quoted: "

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) stated, in what he quoted from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Leave me alone in what I have left alone for you دعوني أو ذروني ما تركتكم
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said this because some of the Companions, out of their eagerness for knowledge and understanding the Sunnah, used to ask the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about things that might not be forbidden, but became forbidden because of their questioning, or things that might not be obligatory, but became obligatory because of their questioning. Therefore, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded them to leave him alone, to leave him alone in what he had left alone for them, as long as he had not commanded them or forbidden them, so they should praise Allah for their well-being. Then he explained the reason for this by saying:
Verily the people before you went to their doom because they had put too many questions to their Prophets and then disagreed with their teachings. فإن ما أهلك من كان قبلكم كثرة مسائلهم واختلافهم على أنبيائهم
Sahih Muslim 1337b
This means that those before us asked the prophets many questions, so they were made strict with them, just as they were strict with themselves. Then they also disagreed with their prophets. I wish that when they asked and were answered, they would have acted upon what was required of them, but they disagreed with the prophets. Disagreeing with a person means opposing him.
