Explanation of the statement of Imam al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) in what he quoted: "

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful:
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) stated, in what he quoted from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding the rights of a Muslim over his brother, that the rights of a Muslim over his brother are many, but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sometimes mentions specific things from among many, out of care for them and honoring them. Among these is what Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) mentioned from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
The rights of a Muslim on the Muslims are five: to respond to the حق المسلم على المسلم خمس : رد السلام
Sahih al-Bukhari 1240
: meaning, if someone greets you, return the greeting to him. And the second hadith:
A Muslim has six duties towards other Muslims: When you meet him, you should salute him حق المسلم على المسلم ست : إذا لقيته فسلم عليه
Bulugh al-Maram 16:1
: so these are two matters:
Initiating the greeting, taken from his saying:
When you meet him, offer him greetings إذا لقيته فسلم عليه
Sahih Muslim 2162b
, and returning the greeting, taken from his saying:
Returning the greeting رد السلام
. So initiating the greeting is a confirmed recommended practice (sunnah muakkadah).
And if the reason for boycotting is hatred, it is forbidden (haram) for more than three days, but for three days or less, there is no harm in boycotting him. It is well known that a person will not boycott his brother except for a reason, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) permitted the Muslim to boycott his brother for three days or less, because a person is human, and there may be something in the hearts that prevents one from bearing to greet him or return his greeting, so a dispensation (rukhsah) was granted for three days or less.
And initiating the greeting is from the young to the old, from the one walking to the one sitting, and from the rider to the one walking, each according to his status. The prescribed formula for the greeting is for a person to say: "As-salamu alaykum" (Peace be upon you), or "As-salamu alayka" (Peace be upon you), both are permissible. And the prescribed response is to say: "Wa alaykum as-salam" (And upon you peace) or "Wa alaykum as-salam" (And upon you all peace).
The reader: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) quoted: " From Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The rights of a Muslim on the Muslims are five: to respond to the salaam, visiting the sick, to follow the funeral processions, to accept an invitation, and to reply to those who sneeze. حق المسلم على المسلم خمس : رد السلام، وعيادة المريض، واتباع الجنائز، وإجابة الدعوة، وتشميت العاطس
Sahih al-Bukhari 1240
, agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim "
