Explanation of the words of Imam al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) regarding what he quoted: "

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful:
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) said, in what he quoted from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
All the sins of my followers will be forgiven except those of the Mujahirin كلُّ أمتي معافى إلا المجاهرين
Sahih al-Bukhari 6069
: This means that all of the Ummah, the Ummah of response who responded to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him),
forgiven معافى
means: Allah the Exalted has forgiven them,
except those who commit sins openly إلا المجاهرين
They are divided into two categories:
The first is that one declares and openly commits the sin, performing the act of disobedience in front of people, committing the sin in front of people while they are looking at him. There is no doubt that he is not among those who are forgiven, because he has brought calamity upon himself and also upon others.
As for the calamity he brings upon himself: it is because he has wronged himself by disobeying Allah and His Messenger. Every person who disobeys Allah and His Messenger is a wrongdoer to himself. Allah the Exalted said:
And they wronged Us not - but they were [only] wronging themselves. وَمَا ظَلَمُونَا وَلَكِنْ كَانُوا أَنْفُسَهُمْ يَظْلِمُونَ
[Al-Baqarah 2:57]
The soul is a trust with you, and you must take care of it with proper care. Just as if you had livestock, you would see me choosing the best pastures for them and keeping them away from harmful, bad pastures, so likewise your soul: you must seek out the good pastures for it, which are righteous deeds, and keep it away from the bad pastures, which are evil deeds.
As for the calamity he brings upon others: it is because when people see that he has committed the sin, it becomes trivial in their minds, and they do the same. He thus becomes, may Allah protect us, one of the leaders who call to the Fire, as Allah the Exalted said about the family of Pharaoh:
And We made them leaders inviting to the Fire, and on the Day of Resurrection they will not be helped. وَجَعَلْنَاهُمْ أَئِمَّةً يَدْعُونَ إِلَى النَّارِ وَيَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ لا يُنْصَرُونَ
[Al-Qasas 28:41]
.
And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Whoever introduces a bad practice in Islam, he will bear its sin and the sin of whoever acts by it until the Day of Resurrection من سنَ في الإسلام سنة سيئة فعليه وزرها ووزر من عمل بها إلى يوم القيامة
As-Sunan al-Kubra lil-Nasa'i 12:118
. This is a type of openly committing sins. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) did not mention it because it is obvious, but he mentioned another matter that may be hidden from some people, saying: And among those who commit sins openly is the person who does an evil deed at night, and Allah covers it up for him, and likewise in his house, and Allah covers it up for him and no one sees it. If he had repented between himself and his Lord, it would have been better for him. But when he rises in the morning and mixes with people, he says: I did such-and-such last night, and I did such-and-such, and I did such-and-such. This person is not among those who are forgiven. This person, may Allah protect us, has had Allah cover him up, yet he has become one who exposes himself.
And this which some people do has two causes:
The first cause is that the person is heedless and simple, not caring about anything. You find him committing the evil deed and then talking about it, as if it were a purity of heart, as the common people say.
And among people are those who are the people of the second cause, whose reason for talking about what they have disobeyed Allah the Exalted with is boasting, may Allah protect us, of their sins and mocking the greatness of the Creator. They become people who talk about sins, boasting of them as if they had gained a spoils of war. These people, may Allah protect us, are the worst of the categories.
There are some people who do this with their companions, meaning that he talks about it with his companions, telling them about a hidden matter that should not be mentioned to anyone. But he does not care about this matter. So he is not among those who are forgiven, because he is among those who commit sins openly.
The conclusion is that it is obligatory for a person to cover himself with the cover of Allah the Exalted, to praise Allah for the forgiveness, and to repent between himself and his Lord from the sins he committed. And if he repents to Allah and turns back to Allah, Allah will cover him in this world and the Hereafter. And Allah is the One who grants success.
