Continuation of the explanation of the statement of Imam al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) regarding what he quoted: "."

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : As for the second one: he is the companion of Jirjis. Jirjis was a man of worship who isolated himself from the people. Isolation is better if there is harm in mixing with people. Isolation is better if there is harm in mixing with people. But if there is no harm in mixing with people, then mixing with people is better. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The believer who mixes with people and endures their harm is better than the believer who does not mix with them and endures their harm. المؤمن الذي يخالط الناس ويصبر على أذاهم خير من المؤمن الذي لا يخالطهم و يصبر على أذاهم
. But if there is harm to your religion in mixing with people, then save your religion, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
It will soon happen that the best property of a muslim will be sheep which he takes to the peaks of the mountains and the valleys يوشك أن يكون خير مال الرجل غنمًا يتبع بها شعف الجبال ومواقع القطر
Muwatta Malik 54:16
: meaning he flees with his religion from trials.
So here, Jirjis isolated himself from the people. He built a hermitage, meaning a place where he would worship Allah (Mighty and Majestic). One day, his mother came to him while he was praying and called out to him. He said to himself: "O my Lord, my mother and my prayer!?" Should I answer my mother and break my prayer, or should I continue in my prayer? So he continued in his prayer.
She came to him a second time and said to him what she had said the first time. He said what he had said before, then continued in his prayer. She came to him a third time and called him. He said what he had said before, then continued in his prayer. Anger overtook her, and she said: "O Allah, do not let him die until he looks at the faces of the women who expose themselves—I seek refuge in Allah—the fornicatresses, until he looks at the faces of the fornicatresses."
And when a person looks at the faces of fornicatresses, he is led astray, because a man’s look at a woman is a trial. How much more so if she is, may Allah protect us, a fornicatress and a prostitute! Because he looks at her as one who allows him to have relations with her, so he is led astray. So she said this phrase.
It is derived from this phrase in the hadith: that if the parents call you while you are praying, it is obligatory to answer them, but on the condition that the prayer is not obligatory. If it is obligatory, it is not permissible to answer them. But if it is a voluntary prayer, answer them.
Except if they are among those who assess matters according to their worth, and if they know that you are in prayer, they will excuse you. Here, indicate to them that you are in prayer, either by clearing your throat, or by saying: Subhan Allah (Glory be to Allah), or by raising your voice in a verse you are reciting, or in a supplication you are making, so that the caller knows that you are in prayer. If you know that these two parents: the mother and the father, have flexibility and will excuse you if you are praying and do not answer, then alert them that you are praying.
For example, if your father comes to you while you are praying the Fajr sunnah, and he says: "O So-and-so," and you are praying. If your father is a flexible man who will excuse you, then clear your throat for him, or say: Subhan Allah, or raise your voice in recitation or in supplication or in the dhikr you are doing, so that he will excuse you. And if he is among those who do not excuse, and they want their word to be the highest, then break your prayer and speak to them. And the same is said regarding the mother.
As for the obligatory prayer, do not break it for anyone, except in case of dire necessity, such as if you see a person you fear will fall into destruction, in a well, in the sea, in fire. Here, break the prayer due to dire necessity. And as for anything else, it is not permissible to break the obligatory prayer.
And it is derived from this part that the supplication of a parent, if it is for a right, is likely to be answered. So the supplication of a parent, even against his child, if it is for a right, is likely that Allah will answer it. For this reason, you should be extremely cautious of the supplication of the parents, so that you do not expose yourself to Allah accepting their supplication and you lose out.
And in it also in the hadith is evidence that the compassion which Allah has placed in the parents may be found something that removes this compassion. Because this supplication is great from this woman, that she supplicates against her son that he not die until he looks at the faces of the women who expose themselves. But the intensity of anger, may Allah protect us, necessitated for her to make this supplication. And success is from Allah.
The reader: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions:
He said -may Allah have mercy on him- in the context of the hadith of Jirjis: "
Then there was a babe who was sucking his mother that a person dressed in fine garment came riding upon a beast. His mother said: O Allah, make my child like this one. He (the babe) left sucking and began to see towards him, and said: O Allah, don't make me like him. He then returned to the chest and began to suck the milk of his mother. He (Abu Huraira) said: I perceived as if I am seeing Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as he is explaining the scene of his sucking milk with his forefinger in his mouth and sucking that. He (Abu Huraira) further reported Allah's Apostle (may be peace upon him) as saying: There happened to pass by him a girl who was being beaten and they were saying: You have committed adultery and you have committed theft and she was saying: Allah is enough for me and He is my good Protector, and his mother said: O Allah, don't make my child like her and he left sucking the milk, and looked towards her and said: O Allah, make me like her, and there was a talk between them. She said: O with shaven head, a good-looking person happened to pass by and I said: O Allah, make my child like him, and you said: O Allah, don't make me like him, and they passed by a girl while they were beating her and saying: You committed fornication and you committed theft, and I said: O Allah, don't make my child like her, and you said: O Allah, make me like her. Thereupon he said: That person was a tyrant, and I said: O Allah, don't make me like him, and they were saying about her: You committed fornication whereas in fact she had not committed that and they were saying: You have committed theft whereas she had not committed theft, so I said: O Allah, make me like her.
