Explanation of the words of Imam al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) regarding what he quoted: "

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reader: "From Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), she said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say:
By his good character a believer will attain the degree of one who prays during the night and fasts during the day.
Sunan Abi Dawud 4798Sahih (Al-Albani)
, narrated by Abu Dawud.
And from Abu Umamah al-Bahili (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
I guarantee a house in the surroundings of Paradise for a man who avoids quarrelling even if he were in the right, a house in the middle of Paradise for a man who avoids lying even if he were joking, and a house in the upper part of Paradise for a man who made his character good.
Sunan Abi Dawud 4800Hasan (Al-Albani)
This is an authentic hadith, narrated by Abu Dawud with an authentic chain.
And from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Indeed the most beloved among you to me, and the nearest to sit with me on the Day of Judgment is the best of you in character. And indeed, the most disliked among you to me, and the one sitting furthest from me on the Day of Judgement are the Thartharun, and the Mutashaddiqun and the Muthafaihiqun." They said: "O Messenger of Allah! We know about the Thartharun, and the Mutashaddiqun, but what about the Muthafaihiqun?"' He said:"The arrogant." إنَّ من أحبكم إليَّ وأقربكم منّي مجلساً يوم القيامة أحاسنكم أخلاقاً، وإن أبغضكم إليّ وأبعدكم مني يوم القيامة الثرثارون والمتشدقون والمتفيهقون، قالوا: يا رسول الله قد علمنا الثرثارون والمتشدقون فما المتفيهقون ؟ قال: المتكبرون
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2018Hasan (Darussalam)
Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, who said: This is a good hadith.
His statement: The loud talkers: are those who talk excessively out of affectation.
And the arrogant speakers: are those who belittle people with their speech and speak with full mouth in an affected manner and to magnify their speech.
And the self-important ones: are those who fill their mouths with speech, and expand upon it and make it strange out of arrogance and elevation and displaying superiority over others"
.

The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful:
These hadiths were collected by the author al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) in the chapter: Good Character, from the book *Riyad al-Salihin*, and most of them have been discussed previously, including his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
The most perfect believer in respect of faith is he who is best of them in manners
Sunan Abi Dawud 4682Hasan Sahih (Al-Albani)
: The meaning is that the best of you are the best of you to their wives, as that came in the two Sahihs that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The best of you is the one who is best to his wife, and I am the best of you to my wives.
Sunan Ibn Majah 1977Hasan (Darussalam)
: A person should be the best companion, the best lover, and the best nurturer with his family, because the family is more deserving of your good character than others. Start with the closest, then the next closest, which is the opposite of the state of some people today and before today: you find them with good character with people, but with their family they have bad character, and I seek refuge in Allah from that. This is contrary to the guidance of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Be of good character with your family and with others as well, but they are more deserving of good character than others. For this reason, when Aisha was asked:
what the Prophet used to do in his house, and she replied that he used to engage in the mihna , i.e. the service, of his family
Mishkat al-Masabih 5816
: He helped them with the household chores, to the extent that he used to milk the sheep for his family, and he used to patch his sandals, and he used to mend his garment, and so a person should be among the best of companions with his family.
Then he mentioned various hadiths explaining good character, and that the closest people to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) are those with the best character, so the better your character, the closer you are to Allah than others.
And the farthest people in rank from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) are the loud talkers, the arrogant speakers, and the self-important ones.
The loud talkers: are those who talk a lot and take the seats from people, so when he sits in a gathering, he takes the speech from others, and it becomes as if he is the only one in the gathering speaking, and he does not let others speak. This is undoubtedly a type of arrogance, but if we assume that the people of the gathering entrusted you and said: Give us advice, give us a sermon, and you spoke, then there is no harm. The issue is ordinary speech where you dominate the gathering and do not let anyone speak, to the extent that some people want to speak but cannot, fearing interruption from this man who has dominated the gathering with his speech.
Likewise, the arrogant speakers: the one who speaks with full cheeks, you find him speaking as if he is the most eloquent of the Arabs out of arrogance and haughtiness. Among this is the one who speaks in the Arabic language in front of the common people, for the common people do not know the Arabic language. If you spoke to them in the Arabic language, they would consider it a type of affected speech and pretension. However, if you are teaching students, you should speak in the Arabic language in order to train them in the Arabic language and its pronunciation. As for the common people who do not know it, you should not speak to them in the Arabic language. Speak to them in the language they know, and do not use strange words: meaning do not use words that are difficult for them, for that is affected speech.
As for the self-important ones: the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) described them as the arrogant ones. The arrogant one is the one who is arrogant toward people and is self-important, and when he walks, it is as if he is walking on paper out of his arrogance and haughtiness. This is undoubtedly a despicable character, and a person must beware of it, because a person is human and should know his own worth. Even if Allah blesses him with wealth, or Allah blesses him with knowledge, or Allah blesses him with status, he should be humble. The humility of those whom Allah has blessed with wealth, knowledge, and status is better than the humility of others who were not like that. For this reason, it came in the hadith:
There are three persons whom Allah will neither talk to nor look at, nor purify from (the sins)
Sahih al-Bukhari 2672
, because the poor person has no reason to be arrogant. The poor person, these are those whom Allah has blessed with knowledge, wealth, and status. The more they humble themselves, the better they become than the humility of others whom Allah has not blessed with that. Every person to whom Allah has given a blessing should increase in gratitude to Allah, humility toward the truth, and humility toward creation. May Allah guide me and you to the good of character and deeds, and keep me and you away from the bad of character and deeds. Indeed, He is Generous and Noble.
