The reader: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) transmitted in the context of the hadiths in the chapter on the etiquettes of the gathering and the companion: "From 'Amr ibn Shu'ayb from his father from his grandfather (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
It is not lawful for a man to separate two persons except with their permission.
Sunan Abi Dawud 4845Hasan Sahih (Al-Albani)
Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi narrated it, and he said: 'A good hadith.' And in a narration by Abu Dawud:
One should not sit between two men except with their permission.
Sunan Abi Dawud 4844Hasan (Al-Albani)
And from Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed the one who sits in the middle of the circle. Abu Dawud narrated it with a good chain. And al-Tirmidhi narrated from Abu Mujlaz that a man sat in the middle of a circle, so Hudhayfah said: 'Cursed is he by the tongue of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), or: May Allah curse by the tongue of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) the one who sits in the middle of the circle.' Al-Tirmidhi said: 'A good, authentic hadith.' And from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: 'I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say:
The best of gatherings are the widest ones
Abu Dawud narrated it with an authentic chain meeting the conditions of al-Bukhari. And from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: 'The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Whoever sits in a sitting and engages in much empty, meaningless speech and then says before getting from that sitting of his: ‘Glory is to You, O Allah, and praise, I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship except You, I seek You forgiveness, and I repent to You, (Subḥānaka Allāhumma wa biḥamdika, ashhadu an lā ilāha illā anta, astaghfiruka wa atūbu ilaik)’ whatever occurred in that sitting would be forgiven to him.
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3433Sahih (Darussalam)
Al-Tirmidhi narrated it and said: 'A good, authentic hadith.'"

The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Among the etiquettes of gatherings is what was mentioned from 'Amr ibn Shu'ayb from his father from his grandfather (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
It is not permissible for a man لا يحل لامرئ
or he said:
for a man to separate two persons except with their permission
Sunan Abi Dawud 4845Hasan Sahih (Al-Albani)
meaning, if you come and find two people, one sitting next to the other, do not separate them unless they give you permission for this, either by saying, "Come, sit here," or by action, where one of them moves away to indicate that you may sit between them. Otherwise, do not separate them, because this is bad etiquette if you ask them to make room, and it is a harm if you sit and squeeze them. Also, among the etiquettes is that a person should sit where the gathering ends, as mentioned previously. It is not permissible for a person to sit in the middle of the circle, meaning, if you see a group sitting in a circle, whether they are sitting around someone teaching them or someone speaking with them, the important thing is that if they are in a circle, do not sit in the middle of the circle. This is because you are obstructing them from those with them. Furthermore, they generally do not like someone sitting in the circle ahead of them, so this would be an encroachment on them and their rights. Unless they give you permission, for example, if the place is narrow and they say, "Please, sit here," then there is no harm. But without permission, Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) cursed the one who sits in the middle of the circle. Also, among the etiquettes of gatherings is that if a person sits in a gathering and there is much idle talk in it, he expiates for it by saying:
Glory be to Thee. O Allah, and I begin with praise of Thee, I testify that there is no god but Thou; I ask Thy pardon, and return to Thee in repentance.
Sunan Abi Dawud 4859Hasan Sahih (Al-Albani)
before he rises from his gathering. If he says that, it erases what was of idle talk from him. Therefore, it is recommended to conclude a gathering with much idle talk with this dhikr, this supplication:
Subhanaka Allahumma wa bihamdika, ash-hadu an la ilaha illa Anta, astaghfiruka wa atubu ilaika (O Allah, You are free from every imperfection; all praise is for You. I testify that there is no true god except You, I ask Your forgiveness and turn to You in repentance).
Riyad as-Salihin 832
And what is necessary in gatherings is also that they be spacious, for the spaciousness of gatherings is among the best of gatherings; the best of gatherings are the widest ones, that they be spacious. Because if they are spacious, they accommodate many people, and there is expansiveness and broadness of chest in them, and this depends on the situation. Some people's rooms may be narrow, but if spaciousness is possible, it is better because it accommodates many people and because it is more expansive for the chest. And Allah knows best.
