The Shaykh : They resided in luxurious palaces, rode in comfortable cars, wore the finest clothes, married, and had maidservants, enjoying the greatest comfort in this world, while the people around them were in misery, suffering, and hunger. Therefore, they must listen and obey, because we have our share and the rulers have their own share. It is obligatory for us to listen and obey, and it is obligatory for the rulers to give us sincere advice and to lead us according to the guidance of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). However, we do not say, when they take exclusive advantage over us, and they have luxurious palaces, comfortable cars, beautiful clothes, and the like, we do not say: “By Allah, we cannot listen to them while they are in their palaces and cars, and we are in misery and need, and one of us cannot even find shelter, and the like.” This is forbidden for us. It is obligatory that we listen and obey, even in the case of exclusive advantage. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to his Companions, the Ansar (may Allah be pleased with them): Sahih Muslim 1845a He said to the Ansar a thousand and three hundred years ago: “You will encounter exclusive advantage after me.” From that time, the rulers have been taking exclusive advantage over the subjects, and yet he said: Sunan an-Nasa'i 5383Sahih (Darussalam) So, the exclusive advantage taken by the rulers does not prevent listening and obeying them. It is obligatory to listen and obey in everything they order, as long as they do not order disobedience to Allah. We have previously mentioned in the last lesson that what the rulers order is divided into three categories:
The first is what Allah has ordered. It is obligatory to obey them in this for two reasons: because Allah ordered it, and because they ordered it.
The second is what Allah has forbidden. It is not permissible to listen and obey them in this, even if they order you to do it.
The third is what is neither ordered nor forbidden by Allah. It is obligatory for us to obey them in this, because the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) did not prohibit obedience to them except when they order disobedience.
We ask Allah to reform us all, subjects and rulers, and to grant us mercy from Him. Indeed, He is the Bestower.
You will surely come across preferential treatment after me, so you should be patient until you meet me at the Cistern (Haud-i-Kauthar).
