Question:
A question from Yemen says: Your Eminence, the scholar Abdul Aziz ibn Baz, peace be upon you and Allah’s mercy and blessings. We are from the sons of Yemen, in the Shabwah Governorate. Some disagreements and divisions have appeared among the committed youth in Yemen in general, and in our region in particular, to the point where the division is within the same house, and between a brother and his brother. This one is a Salafi, this one is an Ikhwan, this one is a Tablighi, and this one is a jihadist. Hatred, resentment, enmity, boycotting, and distancing have spread, and the Sufis, the communists, and others from the people of desires have exploited this disagreement. It is known that each side does not accept a fatwa except from the imams of their group, and considers the other side to be wrong. The Salafi does not accept a fatwa except from Shaykh Muqbil al-Wadi'i, and the Ikhwan does not accept a fatwa except from Shaykh al-Zindani, and so on. So what are your instructions?
Answer:
It is obligatory for everyone to return to the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), and to follow the example of the righteous Salaf. One should look at what the Salaf mentioned regarding the Companions and those who followed them with excellence, and beware of mutual boycotting. If something is difficult, they should return to the scriptural evidence. As for this one following Muqbil, and this one following Abdul Majid, and this one following so-and-so, and this one following so-and-so; this is an error. It is obligatory to refer to the Book and the Sunnah, to be gentle, to look at the scriptural evidence, not to boycott one another, and not to sever ties. If something is difficult, they should refer it to the Book and the Sunnah, and consult without severing ties and without boycotting. They should consult with Shaykh Muqbil, with Shaykh Abdul Majid, and with other brothers, so that there is no severance or hostility between them. And so it is with the believers among themselves: [An-Nisa: 59]. So the believers refer what they disagree upon to Allah and His Messenger. And He, Exalted and Majestic is He, said: [Ash-Shura: 10].
So it is obligatory for them to be humble and gentle, to refer to the Shari'ah, and to be just with themselves. Shaykh Muqbil is known for goodness, knowledge, and virtue, and he has, praise be to Allah, good activity in teaching. The brothers should be just among themselves, return to the scriptural evidence, not boycott one another, and not sever ties. If something is difficult for them, they should write to us and to others from the door of cooperation, and there is no harm in that.
Q: They say: We agree on the fatwa of Shaykh Ibn Baz?
A: Not in all cases, but only on what agrees with the Book and the Sunnah.
Q: They say: There is a party that displays Islam, and it is called: The Yemeni Party for Reform, and it has a pledge and a covenant, and Shaykh al-Zindani is at its head?
A: It is obligatory to refer to the Book and the Sunnah, not to such-and-such a gathering, or such-and-such a gathering, for they may err and they may hit the mark.
Q: Some of the people of the Tabligh group have innovations. Should they not be boycotted for their innovation?
A: Those who have innovations are to be advised. If they persist, they deserve to be boycotted. They are to be advised and directed first, and informed with gentleness, perhaps they will be guided.
