Ruling on Uncovering the Face Before the Sons of One’s Maternal Uncle

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question: A woman asks: Her brother, who is two years younger than her, was breastfed by her maternal uncle’s wife along with her son (the son of her maternal uncle’s wife). Is it permissible for her to uncover her face in front of her maternal uncle’s sons; that is, not to veil herself in their presence? And what is the ruling regarding her sisters who are younger than her brother who was breastfed by her maternal uncle’s wife?

Answer: If the aforementioned breastfeeding is established, and it was five breastfeedings or more, while the infant was within the first two years, then your foster brother becomes your maternal uncle’s son through breastfeeding, and the son of his nursing wife through breastfeeding. Their children become his brothers, your maternal uncle’s brothers become his paternal uncles, and his sisters become his paternal aunts. The nursing wife’s brothers become his maternal uncles, and her sisters become his maternal aunts. This is based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Breast-feeding makes unlawful (for marriages) the same things that blood tie make unlawful.يحرم من الرضاع ما يحرم من النسب
Sunan Ibn Majah 1937Sahih (Darussalam)
It is agreed upon that it is authentic.
As for you, O mother of (Y), you have no kinship through the aforementioned breastfeeding. It is not permissible for you or your sisters to uncover your faces before your maternal uncle’s sons because of your brother’s breastfeeding by your maternal uncle’s wife; because they are not mahram (forbidden relatives) to you. May Allah guide everyone to understanding in the religion and steadfastness upon it.
