Ruling on breastfeeding the son of one’s maternal aunt by one’s maternal grandfather’s wife

The following message was received by the program from the listener (Ahmad M. A.) from Makkah al-Mukarramah. He says in his message: I have a maternal cousin who was breastfed along with my maternal uncle. My maternal uncle is not a full brother to my mother, but rather her brother from her father. Does he and his brothers become my maternal uncles? I also have a female maternal cousin who was breastfed by my maternal uncle’s mother, but she was not breastfed with him; rather, she was breastfed with his sister and brother from their mother and another father. Is it permissible for me to marry her? Please inform us, may Allah reward you.
Answer: If your maternal cousin was breastfed by your grandfather’s wife, even if she is not your maternal grandmother but another wife, then he becomes your maternal uncle and your mother’s brother from her father, provided he was breastfed by your grandfather’s wife, whether she is your maternal grandmother or not. If this infant is breastfed five times or more while he is a child within the first two years, he becomes your maternal uncle because he becomes your mother’s brother from her father. If he is from her mother, he becomes her brother from both her father and mother, and thus he becomes your maternal uncle in any case.
The Shaykh: And what is his second question?
The presenter: I have a female maternal cousin who was breastfed by my maternal uncle’s mother, but she was not breastfed with him; rather, she was breastfed with his sister and brother from their mother and another father. Is it permissible for me?
The Shaykh: If she was breastfed by the wife of the grandfather who is the father of the maternal uncle and the mother, and if she was breastfed by him completely, five times or more, then this female cousin of the maternal uncle also becomes a maternal aunt. She becomes a sister to the mother, just as mentioned previously. Even if she was breastfed by a person before or after her maternal uncle, it is not necessary that it be with her maternal uncle. As long as she was breastfed by the wife of her maternal uncle’s father and her mother’s father, or by another wife who is not their mother but another wife of their father, and whether she was breastfed with them or with children before them or after them, she becomes a maternal aunt if the breastfeeding is five times or more within the first two years.
