Question:
Are the Ash'ariyyah among the people of the Sunnah and the community or not? And do we rule that they are of a different madhhab, or that they are disbelievers?

Answer:
The Asha'irah are among the people of the Sunnah in most matters, but they are not among them in their figurative interpretation of the attributes, and they are not disbelievers; rather, among them are imams, scholars, and righteous people. However, they erred in the figurative interpretation of some attributes, so they opposed the people of the Sunnah in certain issues, including the figurative interpretation of most of the attributes, and they erred in that interpretation. The position of the people of the Sunnah and the community is to let the verses and hadiths regarding the attributes pass as they came, without figurative interpretation, denial of the divine attributes, distortion of a text's meaning, or likening Allah to creation. They are let pass as they came, with the belief that they are the truth and that they are attributes established for Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) in a manner befitting Him, and that He is not likened to His creation in them , as He said :
There is nothing like unto Him, and He is the Hearing, the Seeing.لَيْسَ كَمِثْلِهِ شَيْءٌ وَهُوَ السَّمِيعُ الْبَصِيرُ
[al-Shura: 11], and His saying:
Nor is there to Him any equivalent."وَلَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌ
[al-Ikhlas: 4].
