The seventh question of Fatwa No. ( 6606 ):
Q7: Whatis the ruling on one who died holding to the Ash'ari concept of tawhid (the oneness of Allah) before the concept of tawhid al-asma' wa al-sifat (oneness of the names and attributes) reached himand he had not heard it from anyone nor understood it, and he had affirmed tawhid al-rububiyyah (oneness of lordship) and tawhid al-uluhiyyah (oneness of worship), and no one had pointed it out to him so he denied it; does he have an excuse or not?
A7: His case is left to Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He); because the Asha'irah are not disbelievers, but rather they erred in their ta'wil (figurative interpretation) of some of the attributes. And success is from Allah. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
