The Ruling on a Vow Conditioned on a Specific Event

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
I once said: “I have a vow to Allah that if He saves me from this sin, I will give my mother-in-law a set of gold bangles,” knowing that my mother-in-law is not aware of this. Should I give the bangles to my mother-in-law, or should I expiate with the expiation for an oath?

Answer:
It is obligatory for you to fulfill the vow if the mentioned condition is met; because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Whoever vows to obey Allah, let him obey Him, and whoever vows to disobey Allah, let him not disobey Him.من نذر أن يطيع الله فليطعه، ومن نذر أن يعصي الله فلا يعصه
Sunan Ibn Majah 2126Sahih (Darussalam)
narrated by Imam al-Bukhari in his Sahih. However, if your mother-in-law forgives you, there is no harm, because the right belongs to her in that matter. And success is from Allah.
