The Ruling on Conditional Vows in Acts of Obedience

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
A man was afflicted with an illness, so he made a vow that if Allah cured him, he would fast the white days. Allah cured him, and he began fasting the white days. Should he continue fasting them even though he has begun to feel weary of it?

First: Vowing is disliked, and it is disliked for a person to make a vow, whether upon recovery, or upon success, or upon the recovery of something lost to him; because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade vows.

Second: If one makes a vow of obedience, it is obligatory for him to fulfill it.By the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): (Whoever vows to obey Allah, let him obey Him). Accordingly, it is obligatory for the brother who vowed to fast the white days to fast them every month, unless his intention was to fast them in the month following the month in which Allah cured him, in which case he may suffice with one month. However, if he made the vow without specifying a time, it is obligatory for him to fast them every month.
