The Purpose of Reciting the Qur'an: Reflection and Action

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
A person is proficient in recitation—praise be to Allah. Is it better for him to increase his recitation of the Noble Qur'an from the mushaf, or to listen to one of the reciters via recorded tapes?

Answer:
It is better for him to do what is best for his heart and has the greatest impact on it, whether that is reciting or listening. This is because the purpose of recitation is: reflection and understanding the meaning, and acting upon what the Book of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) indicates. As Allah the Exalted said:
[This is] a blessed Book which We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], that they might reflect upon its verses and that those of understanding would be reminded.
[Surat Sad: 29], and He (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Indeed, this Qur'an guides to that which is most suitable
[Surat al-Isra: 9], and He the Exalted said:
Say, "It is, for those who believe, a guidance and cure."
[Fussilat 41:44]
the verse [Surat Fussilat: 44].
