Question:
His Eminence the Shaykh / Abdul Aziz ibn Abdullah ibn Baz -may Allah preserve him-
Peace be upon you, and Allah's mercy and blessings. As for what follows:
Some people take the mushaf and look through it without moving their lips. Does this situation qualify as reading the Qur'an, or is it necessary to vocalize it and make it audible in order to deserve the reward of reading the Qur'an? And is a person rewarded for looking at the mushaf? Please give us a ruling -may Allah reward you with good-.
Answer:
And upon you be peace, and Allah's mercy and blessings.
There is no harm in looking at the Qur'an without reading it for the sake of reflection, understanding, and comprehending the meaning, but he is not considered a reader, and he does not obtain the virtue of reading unless he vocalizes the Qur'an, even if he does not make it audible to those around him; because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sahih Muslim 804a narrated by Muslim.
And his (peace and blessings be upon him) meaning by "its companions" is those who act upon it, as in the other hadiths. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Mishkat al-Masabih 2137 reported by al-Tirmidhi and al-Darimi with a sound chain of narration.
And he is not considered a reader unless he vocalizes it, as the scholars have explicitly stated.
And success is from Allah.
