The Ruling on Using Incense to Drive Away Shayatins

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
From 'Abd al-'Aziz ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Baz to His Excellency the Honorable Brother, His Highness Prince 'A. M. S., may Allah guide him to what pleases Him and increase him in knowledge and faith.
Peace be upon you, and Allah's mercy and blessings. As for what follows:
Your noble letter, attached and containing three questions, has reached me, and this is the answer to the second: Some people use incense sold at perfumeries called "Naqd," claiming that it drives away Shayatins?

Answer:
I am not aware of any Shari'ah basis for this practice, and it is obligatory to abandon it, as it is one of the superstitions that have no basis. Shayatins are driven away only by increasing the remembrance of Allah, reciting the Qur'an, and seeking refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created. It is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
When anyone lands at a place, and then says:" I seek refuge in the Perfect Word of Allah from the evil of what He has created," nothing would harm him until he marches from that stopping place.من نزل منزلا فقال: أعوذ بكلمات الله التامات من شر ما خلق، لم يضره شيء حتى يرتحل من منزله ذلك
Sahih Muslim 2708a
. A man said to him: "O Messenger of Allah, what did you encounter last night from a scorpion sting?" He said to him (peace and blessings be upon him):
Oh, had you said in the evening: "I take refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He created," nothing would have harmed youأما إنك لو قلت: أعوذ بكلمات الله التامات من شر ما خلق، لم تضرك
Sunan Abi Dawud 3898Sahih (Al-Albani)
. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Whoever says in the morning: "In the name of Allah, with Whose name nothing on earth or in the sky can cause harm, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing," three times, nothing will harm him until evening. And whoever says it in the evening, nothing will harm him until morning.
Sahih Ibn Hibban 7:247
.
And I ask Allah to grant us and you and all our brothers success in beneficial knowledge and acting upon it. He is the All-Hearing, the Near. And may peace be upon you, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.
