Q: Is it permissible to recite this dhikr, which is the dhikr recited to drive the jinn out of a place ? Abu al-Nadr Hashim ibn al-Qasim said: I used to see in my house — meaning he saw the jinn in his house — and it was said to him: O Abu al-Nadr , move away from our neighborhood. He said: That was very hard on me, so I wrote to Kufa , to Ibn Idris, al-Muharibi, and Abu Usamah . Al-Muharibi wrote to me: There was a well in Madinah whose rope was being cut. A group of people stayed there and complained about it to them. So they called for a bucket of water, then they spoke this phrase and poured it into the well. A fire came out of the well and extinguished at the top of the well. Abu al-Nadr said: So I took a measure of water and spoke this phrase into it, then I performed tayammum with it on the corners of the house and sprinkled it. They shouted at me: O Abu al-Nadr , you have burned us! We are the ones who are moving away from you. The dhikr is: (In the name of Allah, we have spent the evening with Allah, from Whom nothing is withheld, and by the might of Allah, which is not approached nor diminished, and by the mighty authority of Allah we hide ourselves, and by all His beautiful names we seek refuge from the demons, and from the evil of the jinn and the jinn of mankind, and from every open or hidden evil, and from the evil of what comes out at night and hides by day, and what hides at night and comes out by day, and from the evil of what He created, scattered, and brought forth, and from the evil of Iblis and his soldiers, and from the evil of every crawling creature, You are the One who grasps its forelock, indeed my Lord is on a straight path. I seek refuge in Allah by what Moses, Jesus, and Abraham, who fulfilled his covenant, sought refuge, and from the evil of what He created, scattered, and brought forth, and from the evil of Iblis and his soldiers, and from the evil of what transgresses), (I seek refuge in Allah, the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing, from the accursed Shaytan), In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate,
[As-Saffat 37:2-10] What is the Shari'ah's opinion regarding this dhikr recited to drive the jinn out of a place, and is it permissible to write this dhikr on a piece of paper and hang it in a place inside the residence or home?
A: The principle regarding the permissibility of supplications and dhikr is that they must have a Shari'ah basis from the Book of Allah or the Sunnah of His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). This dhikr mentioned in the question was mentioned by Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) in his book (Al-Wabil al-Sayyib fi al-Kalim al-Tayyib), and its meaning is correct, and some of its words are quoted from some of the Prophetic supplications. Reciting this supplication over water and sprinkling it in the corners of the house to drive out the jinn in this manner has no basis, and its permissibility requires Shari'ah evidence, and there is no evidence for that. The safest course for a Muslim in his religion is to restrict his supplications
The dhikr is as established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and in that lies much good, benefit, and a strong fortress against the devils. Among this is what Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: It was narrated by the Imam Muslim in his (Sahih), and by the Imam Ahmad in his (Musnad), al-Tirmidhi , and al-Nasa'i , and al-Tirmidhi said: It is a hasan sahih hadith. Likewise, reciting Ayat al-Kursi, for it is authentic from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that it protects the person and guards him from the devil, as that came in It was narrated by al-Bukhari in his (Sahih) as a suspended narration with a form of certainty, and it was narrated by al-Nasa'i in (Amal al-Yawm wa al-Laylah). Likewise, reciting the two Mu'awwidhat: [Al-Falaq 113:1] and [An-Nas 114:1] It is authentic that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to seek refuge from the evil eye of the jinn and the evil eye of humans, so when the two Mu'awwidhat were revealed, he took them and left what was other than them. It was narrated by al-Tirmidhi , al-Nasa'i , and Ibn Majah , and al-Tirmidhi said: It is a hasan sahih hadith. And similar to that are the established Prophetic supplications and dhikr. As for hanging this dhikr in the house to drive out the devil, it is not permissible; because it is a type of the amulets and charms that are prohibited by the Shari'ah; due to the generality of the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): Sunan Abi Dawud 3883Sahih (Al-Albani) It was narrated by the Imam Ahmad , Abu Dawud , and Ibn Majah from Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), and because hanging them leads
to falling into shirk if one believes that this hung item brings benefit or repels harm other than from Allah. Also, in hanging them, there is exposure to their desecration and placing them in places that are not fitting for them, along with the passage of time if they wear out or the owner of the house moves out and no longer needs them, and the like of that. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.

The story of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) entrusted him with the guarding of the zakah of Ramadan, so a person came to him and began to scoop up the food. He said: So I seized him and said: I will surely bring you to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: Let me go, for I am in need, and I have dependents and a severe need. He said: So I let him go. So I woke up in the morning and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Abu Hurayrah, what did your prisoner do last night? I said: O Messenger of Allah, he complained of a severe need and dependents, so I had mercy on him and let him go. He said: But he lied to you and he will return... until Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: So I lay in wait for him the third time, so he came scooping up the food, so I seized him and said: I will surely bring you to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and this is the third time you claim that you will not return and then you return. He said: Let me teach you words by which Allah will benefit you. I said: What are they? He said: When you go to your bed, recite Ayat al-Kursi: Allah, there is no god but He, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer, until you finish the verse, for you will not cease to have a protector from Allah over you, and no Shaytan will approach you until you rise. So I let him go. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: But he told you the truth and he is a liar. Do you know whom you have been speaking to for three nights, O Abu Hurayrah? I said: No. He said: That is a Shaytan.

Say, "I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak
