Explaining the Sunnah in the Supplication of Qunut

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Some imams—may Allah guide them—turn the supplication of qunut in Ramadan into a sermon to move the hearts of the worshippers and make them weep. They mention the Fire and its terrors, and the grave and the conditions of its inhabitants, saying things like: "O Allah, transfer them from the narrowness of the graves and the beds of worms to Your gardens, the gardens of eternity, and so on..." Is this prescribed? Or is it an overstepping in supplication?
What is your advice to the imams regarding this aspect, as competition among them in this has increased? And what is your opinion of one who supplicates in the qunut with the supplication of the funeral prayer, such as saying:
O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, our male and our femaleاللهم اغفر لحينا وميتنا وذكرنا وأنثانا
Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 5:563
? May Allah reward you with good.

Answer:
The Sunnah in the qunut is to supplicate with what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) taught his grandson al-Hasan ibn 'Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with them both), which is:
O Allah, guide us among those You have guided, to the end of itاللهم اهدنا فيمن هديت إلى آخره
Sahih Ibn Hibban 7:117
. And if he supplicates with what is reported that he (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated with, that is good. This is from the hadith of 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) , which is:
O Allah, I seek refuge in Thy pleasure from Thy anger, and in Thy forgiveness from Thy punishment, and I seek refuge in Thee from Thee (Thy anger). I cannot reckon Thy praise. Thou art as Thou hast lauded Thyself.اللهم إنا نعوذ برضاك من سخطك، وبمعافاتك من عقوبتك، ونعوذ بك منك لا نحصي ثناء عليك، أنت كما أثنيت على نفسك
Sahih Muslim 486
. And from that is the supplication in the qunut of 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) : "O Allah, we seek Your help and we ask You for guidance, to the end of it." And if he supplicates with good supplications along with that, there is no blame on him. However, it is prescribed for him to seek brevity and avoid lengthening it so as not to burden the people, and to seek comprehensive supplications, such as asking for Paradise and what brings one near to it in word or deed, and seeking refuge in Allah from the Fire and what brings one near to it in word or deed, and asking Him for forgiveness by saying:
Allahumma innaka 'afuwwun tuhibbul-'afwa, fa'fu 'anni (O Allah, You are Forgiving and love forgiveness, so forgive me)اللهم إنك عفو تحب العفو فاعف عنا
Sunan Ibn Majah 3850Sahih (Darussalam)
.
In summary, there is no specific supplication in this other than what is reported in the hadith of al-Hasan and his father, and the supplication of 'Umar. May Allah guide them all.
