The Ruling on Making Up Missed Prayers and Fasts for One Who Deliberately Abandoned Them Before Repentance

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
A man was immersed in major sins and did not pray or fast, but Allah the Exalted guided him years ago, so he avoided major sins and began to pray at their times and to fast. Does he have to make up the fasting or praying that he owed from the past before his guidance?

Answer:
Repentance wipes out what came before it, if one did not pray or fast and committed major sins, then repented. Repentance wipes out what came before it. Allah Mighty and Majestic says in His great Book:
And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed.
[An-Nur:31] So whoever repents has succeeded. And He says, Exalted is He:
O you who have believed, repent to Allah with sincere repentance. Perhaps your Lord will remove from you your misdeedsيَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا تُوبُوا إِلَى اللَّهِ تَوْبَةً نَصُوحًا عَسَى رَبُّكُمْ أَنْ يُكَفِّرَ عَنْكُمْ سَيِّئَاتِكُمْ
[At-Tahrim:8] The word "perhaps" from Allah is obligatory. So Allah forgives his evil deeds if he repents. And He says, Mighty and Majestic:
But indeed, I am the Perpetual Forgiver of whoever repents and believes and does righteousness and then continues in guidance.
[Ta-Ha:82]. And He says, Exalted is He:
And those who do not invoke with Allah another deity or kill the soul which Allah has forbidden [to be killed], except by right, and do not commit unlawful sexual intercourseوَالَّذِينَ لَا يَدْعُونَ مَعَ اللَّهِ إِلَهًا آخَرَ وَلَا يَقْتُلُونَ النَّفْسَ الَّتِي حَرَّمَ اللَّهُ إِلَّا بِالْحَقِّ وَلَا يَزْنُونَ
[Al-Furqan:68].
The point is that Allah Mighty and Majestic explained the state of the fornicator, the thief, and the sinner:
And those who do not invoke with Allah another deity or kill the soul which Allah has forbidden [to be killed], except by right, and do not commit unlawful sexual intercourse. And whoever should do that will meet a penalty.
[Al-Furqan 25:68]
Among the characteristics of the slaves of the Merciful are that they do not invoke any deity besides Allah, they do not kill the soul which Allah has forbidden except by right, and they do not commit fornication. Among the characteristics of the slaves of Allah are chastity from fornication and chastity from killing souls without right. And among the characteristics of the slaves of the Merciful are sincerity to Allah and complete tawhid (the oneness of Allah). Whoever does the opposite of that, whether he associates partners with Allah, kills a soul without right, or commits fornication,
He will meet a punishment.
his punishment will be multiplied on the Day of Resurrection, and he will abide therein in humiliation. [Al-Furqan:68-69] We seek refuge in Allah from that.
Except for those who repent, believe and do righteous work. For them Allah will replace their evil deeds with good. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful.
[Al-Furqan:70].
And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Repentance wipes out what came before itالتوبة تجب ما قبلها
, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The one who repents from sin is like one who did not sin.
Sunan Ibn Majah 4250Da’if (Darussalam)
So whoever repents from his evil deeds and actions, Allah forgives them for him.
And repentance has three conditions: regret for the past evil deeds, abandoning them, and the sincere resolve not to return to them. This repentance is that one regrets his past evil deeds, such as shirk (associating partners with Allah) and disobedience, and that he abandons them and leaves them out of fear of Allah, reverence for Him, and sincerity to Him, and that he resolves with a sincere resolve not to return to them. If he does this, he has repented with sincere repentance, and Allah forgives his past sins with it.
And there is a fourth condition if the sin involves a created being. It is necessary to have a fourth condition, which is to seek his forgiveness or give him his right. If the sin involves wronging a person, taking his money, hitting him, or killing him, it is necessary to give him his right or seek his forgiveness for that, and to give the right of the killed person retaliation, unless the awliya (close friends of Allah) of the killed person pardon. In the case of money, he gives him the money that was taken from him. In the case of honor, likewise, he seeks forgiveness if the right was backbiting. If that is not possible for him, he prays for him and mentions him with the good he knows of him in the gatherings where he mentioned him with evil. The point is that if the right belongs to a created being, it is necessary, along with the three conditions, to have a fourth condition, which is to give the created being his right or seek his forgiveness for that.
