The ruling on supplicating for one who died upon shirk (associating partners with Allah)

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
This man asks, saying: My father used to engage in matters of shirk (associating partners with Allah); he would ask the dead, make vows to them, and call upon the dead for aid. Should he supplicate for him?

Answer:
One who dies upon shirk (associating partners with Allah) is not to be supplicated for. Allah, (Exalted and Majestic is He), says:
It is not for the Prophet and those who have believed to ask forgiveness for the polytheists, even if they were relatives, after it has become clear to them that they are companions of Hellfire.
[Surah al-Tawbah: 113]. The man is prohibited from seeking forgiveness for his parents if they died upon disbelief (kufr). When Abu Talib died upon disbelief, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to seek forgiveness for him, but Allah prohibited him from doing so.
So, O Abdullah, you must not seek forgiveness for him, nor supplicate for him or against him. His affair is left to Allah, as long as he died worshipping the graves; asking the dead, calling upon them for aid, seeking their help, and making vows to them. This is major shirk (associating partners with Allah), like the one who worships idols. We seek refuge in Allah from that.
