The Ruling on Making Du'a for One Who Died in a State of Shirk Due to Ignorance

Question:
With Allah's blessing, we begin this session with a message from the questioner (H. H.) from Bani Malik, who says: "Your Eminence! I would like to ask a question that is on my mind, which is: What is the ruling on one who died associating partners with Allah—may Allah protect us from shirk—but did not know the severity of that matter? He was among the ignorant people of the villages at that time, and they did not know that shirk is among the greatest of major sins, and he died in that state. My question is: Are we obligated to make du'a for them for mercy and forgiveness, and to perform Hajj and 'Umrah on their behalf? And does that deed benefit them? Please give us a detailed answer, Your Eminence, Shaykh Abdul Aziz."
Answer:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon whoever follows his guidance. As for what follows:
Shirk is the greatest of sins... it is the greatest of major sins, as the noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said in the authentic hadith: We said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah. He said: And this is indicated by the saying of the Exalted: [Al-Nisa: 48].
Shirk is the greatest of sins and the ugliest of evil deeds. So whoever dies upon it will not be forgiven, and he is among the people of the Fire, abiding therein forever. One does not perform Hajj on his behalf, nor pray for him, nor make du'a for him, nor give charity on his behalf; because Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) said: [Az-Zumar: 65] And He said, the Exalted: [Al-An'am: 88] And He said regarding the polytheists: [Al-Baqarah: 167].
Shirk is directing worship to other than Allah, or a part of it, such as one who calls upon the dead, or the stars, or the prophets, or the angels, seeking their aid, making vows to them, and slaughtering for them. This is shirk.
Likewise, one who denies something that Allah has made obligatory, which is known from the religion by necessity, upon which the Muslims have reached consensus, such as one who denies the obligation of prayer, or denies the obligation of zakah, or denies the obligation of fasting Ramadan, or denies the obligation of Hajj with the ability to perform it, or considers permissible what Allah has forbidden from the matters known from the religion by necessity, upon which the Muslims have reached consensus regarding its prohibition, such as zina and khamr, saying: "Zina is lawful," or "Khamr is lawful," or saying: "Undutifulness to parents is lawful." This is major kufr (disbelief). One does not pray over him, nor seek forgiveness for him, nor perform Hajj on his behalf, nor give charity on his behalf; because he died other than upon Islam.
As long as he is among the Muslims, having heard the Qur'an, seen the Muslims, and seen their deeds, he is not excused. The proof has been established against him; because Allah, the Exalted, says: [Al-An'am: 19] Whoever the Qur'an has reached, the proof has been established against him. Allah, the Exalted, said: [Ibrahim: 52] And because he turned away, did not learn, and did not ask, and his affair is left to Allah. But this is his ruling in this world, like the majority of the disbelievers of Quraysh who were killed on the Day of Badr, and on other days, or who died in Makkah. The majority of disbelievers today, the majority of disbelieving Christians, the disbelieving Jews, all of them are ignorant. But because they were pleased with what they were upon, and did not submit to what Allah sent Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) with, and did not pay attention to it, they became disbelievers. So we ask Allah for well-being and safety. Yes.
The presenter: O Allah, amen. May Allah reward you with good.
