The Ruling on Consistently Performing Qunut in Tarawih
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Some imams continue to perform qunut in the witr prayer every night. Is there any report of this from our Salaf?
Answer:
There is no harm in that; in fact, it is a recommended practice (sunnah). When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) taught al-Hasan ibn 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) the qunut in the witr prayer, he did not order him to omit it at times, nor did he order him to persist in it constantly. This indicates the permissibility of both actions. For this reason, it is established from Abu ibn Ka'b that when he was leading the Companions in the mosque of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he would omit the qunut on some nights, perhaps to let people know that it is not obligatory. And success is from Allah.
