The Ruling on Drinking While Standing

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The questioner says: —Inquiring about this hadith— The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
None of you should drink while standing; and if anyone forgets, he must vomit.لا يشربن أحدٌ منكم قائمًا، فمن نسي وشرب قائمًا فليستقيء
Sahih Muslim 2026
There is a type —he says— of strictness regarding not drinking while standing, but in the other hadith from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), he said: “I gave the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) water from Zamzam, and he drank while standing.” It is agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim. How do you reconcile this with that, O Shaykh?

Answer:
Drinking while sitting is better, and there is nothing wrong with drinking while standing. The hadith regarding inducing vomiting has been abrogated; because the authentic hadiths indicate that he (peace and blessings be upon him) used to drink while standing and while sitting, from the hadith of Ibn Abbas and from the hadith of Ali . So there is nothing wrong with drinking while sitting or standing, and sitting is better. As for:
Let him induce vomitingفليستقيء
it has been abrogated. Yes.
