The Shaykh : And as for the third chapter in today's lesson, it is what a person says when he puts on a new garment. There is no doubt that a person does not possess the power to benefit or harm himself except what Allah wills. There is no doubt that what we eat, drink, and wear is a blessing from Allah (Mighty and Majestic), and that He is the One who created it for us. If Allah had not made it easy, it would not have been facilitated. If Allah the Exalted had willed, wealth would have been removed from before us, and we would not have been able to obtain anything. If Allah had willed, we would find wealth among us, but we would not find anything to eat, wear, or drink. [Al-Mulk 67:30] So all that we have of blessing is from Allah, and among that is clothing. If Allah bestows upon you a new garment—a shirt, trousers, a ghutrah, a mashlah, or a flannel shirt—and you put it on, say: "O Allah, to You belongs all praise. You have clothed me with it." And name it by its name: "O Allah, to You belongs all praise. You have clothed me with this shirt. You have clothed me with these trousers. You have clothed me with this ghutrah. You have clothed me with this cap. You have clothed me with this flannel shirt. You have clothed me with this mashlah." Whatever you wear that is new, praise Allah and say: "O Allah, to You belongs all praise. You have clothed me with it. I seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil of what was made for it. From its evil and the evil of what was made for it." How is its evil? Yes, its evil may be a cause of evil for you. Perhaps the fire will consume its edge and then spread until it destroys this garment and destroys you as well. Perhaps it contains poisonous substances of which you know nothing. So the important thing is that you say: "O Allah, I seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil of what was made for it," because it may be made and become a cause of evil. These are three sentences, four. And success is from Allah.
